Spermbirds – my god rides a skateboard
If you would ask me, what is the best-known song out of Germany with a connection to skateboarding, I´d say “My god rides a skateboard” by the hardcore/punk band Spermbirds from Kaiserslautern.
Betonhausen indoors
Betonhausen is A D.I.Y. spot in Berlin funded by c-list energy drink. (But really, is there anything as an grade A energy drink?) It has an outdoor part that looks like it served as the concrete college. Check it out. They’ve added an indoor part as well, 3 videos after the jump. The best video in the series is part two, which features the construction, including huge chunks of styrofoam sculpted in place and used instead of fill dirt.
Friday T&A on S&A: Muckefuck
The rough translation of “muckefuck” is Germanic Europe slang for fake or substitute coffee, going back to one of the world’s many fine wars when coffee became unavailable. Muckefuck is also the name of a skateboard company that has branched out into wheels as well. Speaking of fake coffee, some things are downright tasteless…
Rekiem
The last time I posted about Rekiem was in 2009. Not much has changed since then, they’re still screening the veneer before they press the boards, which is about a million times easier, but that doesn’t bother me in the slightest. Keep making videos about pressing and screening skateboards and I’ll keep posting them. Looks like they’re using a wood burner for the top graphic. That’s cool. – Thanks to Matthijs for the tip.
Dear Patients …
… this is Doc Skaterock a.k.a. Flow writing from Germany. Kilwag asked me, if I wanted to be an author for sna, and hell yeah, I want to be a part of that site. What an honor, thank you Kilwag!! So what am I going to write here about? Skaterock? Yes! Skatesploitation? Yes! And for sure some other trash, too. We will see. For those who don´t know me so far, I´ve been writing about my passion Skaterock for more than one and a half decade now, starting with my own fanzine in 1996 (simply called “Skaterock”) and then writing and photographing for the German skatemag Boardstein from the beginning (2000) till the end of it (2008 or was it 2009?). This year I finished and self-published my book about what I dared to call “Vintage Skaterock”, the skateboard music that was performed and recorded before the term “Skaterock” was officially created. I hope you are also interested in that kinda stuff. Please fell free to comment, sent tips, leave feedback, give away your record collection…. … enjoy life! yours sincerely Dr. Skaterock
Grindbakken by Rotor
Dezeen has photos of some skateable industrial architecture painted up pretty and chopped up a little and presented as an art installation. The bank looks fun, but the installation looks really intriguing actually. Rotor is the collective culprit in Belgium. – MC is an art phag.
Juicebox Lowrider
Monster truck version of a skateboard? You can buy that at Toys R Us, but Juicebox built a lowrider skateboard in the spirit of the dork session. Juiceboxforyou.com is actually a site focusing on car culture in Ireland, so go figure.
DIY Beast
After a few making a few DIY spots in Zurcih, Switzerland, the September Wheels crew decided to build a bowl, which they christened “The Beast.” You can watch the process (16 minutes) after the jump or check out some pics on blogspot.
Now with less Radium, more RAD-ium
Turns out that the Otro skatepark we showed earlier this year is now coated with phosphorescent paint. So now it glows in the dark and possibly gives you cancer if you knee slide without pads… Other sites are reporting that the concrete itself is phosphorescent, but on the architect’s site it mentions the paint. I can’t imagine how much radium it would take to make the concrete glow, so painting seems the obvious choice. OK, Ok, they probably don’t use radium these days, but it makes for a good pun.
