On the board of the museum
You say you’ve always wanted a skateboard in the shape of the New Museum in New York? Well your long wait is over, because Chapman Skateboards is producing a limited run of 150 of these boxy decks to be sold in the museum gift shop. They kind of look like a pixelated version of the old Skull Skates mutant. If you watch the video, you can see the deck is cruiser sized. Chapman decks are made in the USA, don’t cha know… I didn’t, actually. It’s probably an exciting collaboration for Chapman, but it’s a little hard to get excited about the deck shape if you’re not connected with the museum in some way, as a fan or a neighbor. I suppose you could use it to impress people without lying. “You know, I’m currently on the board of a museum in New York, they wanted me to buy it.” [Source: DesignBoom] – Thanks to MC for the tip.
Stay Golden
Remember the gold plated skateboard? Now you can watch the process. Yes, I’m phoning it in today.
Gentlemans Doodle Pad
Artist David Jablow has a whole series of suggestive doodle pad illustrations brought to illogical conclusions. In fact, he’s got a book you can buy. The one you’re about to see is skateboard related, of course. [Source: Aplus.com]
Jim Phillips Interview on Design Boom
Designboom has a lightweight interview with Jim Phillips. It’s nothing new for the most part, but it’s interspersed with lotos of graphics and the great shot above of Jim in his natural habitat. It’s worth checking out just for the larger version of that photo. – Thanks to MC for the tip.
Go Skate PDX event
You’re looking at a quarter pipe with a final surfacing made of recycled skateboards, put together by Maple XO for an event called Go Skate PDX to be held at Gallery 135 in Portland on June 21st. It’s an art show to benefit public skateparks in Portland. More pics and flyer after the jump.
A penny suit for your thoughts
On the left: 1995, Simon Woodstock skating for Vans with a ‘penny board’ in his first penny suit (as seen in Skate Book 2, p.106). On the right: March 2014, Simon visiting Lance Mountain Jr.’s art show in style with his new penny suit and a penny bike (at the Seeing Things Gallery in San Jose). A different kind of skateboard loop
As seen on Boom Art, with no explanation. It looks like it might actually be a fingerboard though. Something about those trucks and wheels, plus the fact that it appears to be a 3 ply board.
Joe Iurato
Joe Iurato paints little plywood figures and leaves them in the streets. They aren’t all skateboarders, but some of them are. The Gonz looks like he was modeled from a Bryce Kanights photo. You can read a short interview with Joe at Brooklyn Street Art. [Source: Colossal] – Thanks to MC for the tip.
Boom Art and Alain Aslan pinups
Alain Aslan was a pinup artist most famous for his work in Lui magazine. He passed away earlier this month, so it’s kind of unclear how long this limited edition skateboard set from Boom-Art has been in the works, and whether or not it’s authorized. They sent me a press release earlier this week but I accidentally deleted it, and there’s still no mention on their blog. They’ve got a high percentage of women in various states of undress on their boards. Although the do claim to have the first European female pro model. Who knows if it was a response to criticism or not, but Chloé Bernard is happy. The Nash pasties here were probably unnecessary, but to be honest, they amuse me and I enjoy placing them over naughty bits. Free love version after the jump. If you want to see bigger version of the two Lui covers in the background, you must travel back to 2007 in order to travel back to 1977.
The illustrated skateboarder
On the left, an illustration from a series called “Vince & Leo” by Dan Pagan, imagining Vincent van Gogh and Leonardo da Vinci as modern day graffiti artists in Brooklyn. On the right is an illustration from a series called “Skateboarding is a Crime” by Gerhard Human. Hand printed, numbered and signed editions of 30 will be sold with all proceeds going to aid development of skateparks in South Africa. – Thanks to MC for the tip.
