Born Ugly and Sharkbeast
I got an envelope from Born Ugly with issue number nine and a Snakebeast comic from contributor James Callahan, courtesy of his collaboration with Carhartt, who has also released some Snakebeast decks, one that looks like it came straight out of Aaron Murray’s quiver. If you love Born Ugly, you won’t be disappointed with issue 9. As for Snakebeast, I gotta say I wasn’t into it at first but I about midway through it I started coming around. By the time it was over I wanted more. It’s short one and only a one off I believe. Maybe it will stoke James to make it a series. Check out the decks after the jump.
What else is left?
I thought Maple XO’s IPhone cases were the pinnacle in recycled skateboard chic, but I have to say these glass frames by brothers Baptiste and Gianni Vuerich are the new winners. I’d wear these if I could afford them. No idea how much they cost, but they have to be expensive. I found them while tracing down a tip from Michel Skart Poulin on a coat hanger these guys made. I kept trying to find a web site for these guys, and running across other items they made. The Vuerich’s are some talented mofo’s but they don’t seem to be able to hold down a web site.
Kanights Night
Bryce Kanights is releasing book in collaboration with his father Daniel, titled Moments through the Viewfnder. There’s an opening party at 220 Salon in Portland on Thursday. April 14th from 6:30pm – 10pm. Prints and books will be for sale. DJ MyG will be spinning tunes. father and son eh? That sounds pretty interesting, actually. I resisted the temptation to call this post The courtship of Bryce’s father.
You’re kiln it!
You’re kiln it! Ha ha hah ha hah ha ha haha ha ha ha ah hahah ha hah hah ha HA! Get it? GET IT?
Carving vs. carving
A German cat named Tobias Megerle has commissioned traditional wood carvers in Mombai, India to make ornamental skateboards instead of furniture for a change, and boy do those sorry guys look miserable. He plans on showing them in an exhibit at a gallery called the Loft at Lower Parel. Megerle said he had been fascinated with the craft but wanted to find a way to showcase it that wasn’t so stuffy and boring. Here’s why he chose skateboards: …the good old skateboard. In Mumbai — though almost completely unknown — the skateboard is, in many places, more than just a piece of sports equipment. It’s an entire lifestyle that’s created around it, a unique music style, special clothes, whole skater-parks. So that’s a heads up to all our, uh… Indian readers. Mark Marc McKee book in the works
There’s a decent short interview with Mark McKee in advance of his new book Warning: The Art of Marc McKee. Let’s see, where is this interview… on, errr… ESPN? Guess so. Mark made his, err… mark on some of the most famous and infamous World Industries graphics. – Thanks to Eric Cherry for the tip.
Mercury 7 and the New 9 opening
Arthur Lindsey is curating an exhibit at Artery called Mercury 7 and the New 9 featuring Dave Carnie, Ashley Anson, Russ Pope, Salvador Perdomo, Ray Gordon, Kim Hamblin, Todd Bratrud, Roger Seliner, Chris Johanson, David Petersen, Andy Jenkins, Jason Adams, Chris Corales, Johanna Jackson, Chris Pastras and Sam Coomes. More info after the jump.
Man About Town
Yeah.. I’m at a loss about this one. Man About Town is a magazine with “Babes, bikes, battleships, booze, burgers, boards & beastly behaviour” but then this video sure is an odd one. I was intrigued with the juxtaposition of stlyes and eras, and ready to give it a thumbs up based purely on the execution of the concept, but the major continuity blunder in going from penny loafers to Vision Street Wear high tops bummed me out. I might have to invent an S&A award just so I can give it to this video. Make no mistake, I love it that people feel a need to make skateboarding videos like this. I wonder if Kilian Martin turned up to the shoot with a European carryall for a skatebag… Has anyone seen this magazine? I mean, I know people have seen it, but I’m asking our readers. Keep it alive
There was a tradition of converting old waterskis into skateboards that seems to have fallen by the wayside in this millennium, but someone over at Deep is keeping it alive. This was just a personal project, these guys also make those artisan longboards. the web site is a little maddening because there’s no indication of who, what, or where Deep is, outside of some vague manifesto, but hey, I guess that’s art.
Stumptown Coffee
This is a recent advert for Stumptown Coffee that appeared in the Portland Mercury. It’s not the first skateboard themed ad they’ve run. I chopped out some negative space in this to make it take up less vertical space here. My apologies to the artist Tim Root. – Thanks to MC for the tip.
