Dew Tour Hijinks
Earth Patrol Media shows us what happens when second (and third) string skateboard company moguls get in to the Dew Tour. Unfortunately, they were unable to abscond with the effigy of Ryan Sheckler, or burn it. Can you believe they want to sell you Dew Tour skateboards for $80? These are not completes mind you, just the deck. It’s ironic that the graphic on the deck is a bunch of robots. Maybe they’ll make one with lemmings next time. Check it out.
Chinese McRad?
This skateboarding cow is from a series of advertisements for McDonald’s in China that features exercising cows. A few advertising blogs have spotlighted it, but they don’t appear to know anything about it (other than who made it) and never seem to point back to the source of the image. It took me a few days to find someone who reproduced it larger. Check it out after the jump.
Burnside is/is not Ground Zero
People who run skateboard web sites get some weird mail. There’s a guy out there that wants to warn Portland skateboarders… of what, I’m not sure. Something to do with a nuclear blast drill being held in Portland. Curiously, this image from a Harvard University’s 2007 Day After Report shows the outlying St Johns bridge near Pier Park as ground zero, and not the Burnside Bridge, which is typically thought of as ground zero for skateboarding and Portland at large. Subject: potential crisis at Burnside I’m a former skater and I have seen info on the militaries operation Nobel Resolve scheduled for Portland, OR Aug 20-24. The public is nervous because they are doing a drill to respond to a nuclear device in downtown Portland. The target area includes the river and bridge area and after Minneapolis I’d shut Burnside down tomorrow morning, since it’s under a bridge and it can be destroy by the city of Portland at any time it wishes. Here’s a link to what’s flying around the Internet. Better to be safe than sorry. I hope you can contact people who can warn the skaters in Portland quickly. Call skate shops please and skate magazines. Know…
How not to comment on Skate and Annoy
Due to a rash of recent comment flame wars on our beloved Skate and Annoy I thought I should point out a few simple guidelines to keep in mind when commenting: Don’t be a dick. Keep gratuitous swearing to a minimum, especially when it comes to phrases you might hear in an adult film. The first guideline keeps the site from being stupid. The second keeps the site from being added to the content blacklists and filters that some companies and schools use to block content for their viewers. I’d prefer not to have users register to post comments, and I swear, if I have to pull this car over you’ll be sorry! With your help, we can keep Skate and Annoy from becoming this.
I h8 April the Vine.
This website says she’s a self-proclaimed skatepunk. This is from a fashion supplement to Wired Magazine. Does she really have an empty pool in her backyard? I take all the scorn back, can I come over April?
Sheckler’s ego now too big to fit on web page.
…and the Skate and Annoy servers are being braced for an onslaught of teenage girls posting “why all the hating? UR just jealous!” comments. Ryan Sheckler has a show on MTV called Life of Ryan. And now, my life is complete. The programming geniuses nay, wizards at MTV are really on a roll here, recycling yet another another skateboarder reality show, this time even managing to rip off Monty Python in the process. Head on over to the web site for lots of Tiger Beat style pinup photos of Ryan and his cast of friends and family, which apparently involve 55 gallon drums of hair product. How can we say he has an out of control ego? [Source: Skate Daily via Skateboarding Sucks]
Let your little skater out
EA’s upcoming skateboarding video game called Skate (Duh!) is being heralded as a Tony Hawk killer. Not the actual Tony Hawk, but his video game franchise… The idea that it will kill the franchise is slim to none. It could easily be better than the latest version of the Hawk-named game, but they’ll still milk make a few more because It’s firmly entrenched by now. This seems like a good a time as any to bring up Thrasher’s Skate and Destroy game, that unexpectedly fizzled. I mean, what a perfect product tie-in. The game was a good one too. It took a different approach from an art direction standpoint, going for a more stylized look than trying to emulate realism. They had a decent development studio behind it too. Maybe they were a little bit too early. Oh well, I guess everything Fausto touched couldn’t turn to gold. I had kind of stopped collecting and chronicling current skateboarding video game commercials. They are just too prevalent now. This new one for Skate is pretty good though. It’s funny and features some name skaters acting on camera, and doing a good job of it too. The gist of it is that…
Another skatepark causes misery
Last time New Jersey. This time in the UK. Local residents who live adjacent to the skatepark are very concerned with vulgar talk and behavior. However, we now feel that if we allow our children to spend time in our garden they will have vulgar language permeating through their ears. What affects us more directly are the youths who smoke and use very vulgar language towards each other, which is audible from our garden. This means that we are unable to sit out on dry days with family and friends whilst this abusive language can be heard so clearly. I felt kind of bad for them, until I learned where they lived. SOME Cockermouth residents and councillors claim a skateboard ramp in the town is causing them misery..
Hawk gets annoyed at E3
A seemingly drunk or otherwise incapacitated Jamie Kennedy interviewed Tony Hawk and his game developer at E3, which is to video games what an eBay convention would be like for skateboard collectors. Jamie is clearly phoning in his performance and bombing, but it’s still pretty funny to watch him take the piss out of all the video game geeks. Also amusing is when Tony Hawk realizes he’s in a bullshit situation and turns it back on Jamie a little. Watch the vid (only if you are bored) after the jump. And while we’re doing video games and skateboarding, if you are truly bored, you can also see a picture of a board someone painstakingly painted with a character from the Legend of Zelda. Skate and Annoy on TV? Uhmm.. Yes. Tonight.
Errr… I forgot to mention this. We’re going to be featured on a TV show called Attack of the Show on the G4 channel. I kind of forgot about it because we were supposed to be on earlier but got bumped for the iPhone. (The nerve!) Attack of the Show is described as a “daily show covering the hottest in film, TV, games, gear and music.” It’s like a TV version of Details Magazine for computer geeks, with a little bit of FHM thrown in via a sprinkle of titillating subject matter and a sassy female co-host. They have a blog coverage segment, and we’ve been chosen to appear. I have no control over what they say or show, but given the mainstream media’s quality history of skateboard culture coverage, I’m sure there is nothing to worry about. I’m crossing my fingers anyway. It airs tonight, Wednesday, July 18, at 7PM & 11PM ET/PT. Find it on your cable/satellite provider. Now if only there was some sort of forum to highlight such appearances…
