Archie 361 looks a little 90’s but it’s actually dated October 1988. There’s a wind-skating cover and a brief bit of skateboarding in one of the stories. On the inside cover there’s an advert with an illustration of a kid holding a skateboard and wearing an M&Ms shirt you can order. There’s also a “Mini Frog” prize you can earn in an Olympic Sales Club ad. Boss shot of Barney dressed up as a new-wave punker while trying to steal Fred Flintstone’s Pebbles cereal.
Here’s the cover. I had hoped that the wind-sailing equipment would feature in a story but it doesn’t.
The story that features some brief skateboarding is titled “Feelings.” The gist is, Archie hassles Veronica for making such a big deal about breaking her fingernail. Then a random kid with a skateboard crashes into Archie and somehow Archie ends up stuck on the skateboard as he rolls downhill towards a terrible crash. A dog comes along and bites him, and then Veronica tells him to stop moaning about it. The swapping places with the skateboard in a collision is a common gag in Archie comics, and something I don’t think anyone has witnessed in person, ever. Unless it was done on purpose.

Here’s the M&Ms advert. Aside form the painters cap, which were all the rage in the 80’s, there’s also the “custom designed t-shirt.” I’m not sure how it’s customized, other than allowing you to pick the size.
Next up, Olympic Sales Club.

Here’s the bonus shot of New wave Barney Rubble. The advert is called “Bedrockin’ Shakedown.” It’s surprising how much children’s cereal marketing revolved around cartoon characters trying to steal cereal. I can think of Pebbles, Trix, and Lucky Charms, are there others?
