Digging in Spain

The Turf isn’t the only skatepark waiting around to be unearthed. Spain’s first skatepark in… In where? They don’t say! Anyway, they’ve been dogging by hand for over a year and have the freestyle platter and one of the bowls unearthed. The video (Digging) is a about 18 minutes long, and you have to wait about 14 to see some present day skating. I would have liked to see more of the surrounding terrain. It’s like they are keeping it a secret. Confusion says it’s near Barcelona in Arenys de munt. So does S.U.S.C. Digging and bonus vid after the jump. I wonder what’s up with saving the Turf?

  1. Yeah, it’s pretty inspiring to see the laid-back nature of the people, and the community involvement.
I can only imagine the beaurocratic nightmare in the Paranoid States of America that is preventing dudes posting up on the Turf, and just digging it.
Maybe if Nike could bankroll it, and make a sequel to this rad film….
    NIKE? Anybody listening in Oregon?

  2. I heard there was a skatepark in Gresham Oregon in the 70’s.
Does anyone have info on that?

Definitely in Barcelona area, but Spain’s oldest skatepark is/was Parque Sindical in Madrid, whic looks similar in design to the stills of the original bowls in this video, deep, no flat bottom, no coping. The Bones Brigade did demos at the place in the early 80’s. “El Sindi” was open right upto 2009. Curiously enough, it had a major repair job done on it in 2008, then was closed soon after in 2009, the land sold for redevelopment I guess, which you can be sure has not happened as Spain is in deep shit economically these days. Here’s a link to pix of the park.

i think both skateparks (el Parque Sindical and Arenys de Munt) were built at the same time, the only info i could find is that both were built in 1979.

I learned to skate at the Parque Deportivo Sindical near Madrid in 1985-6. I’m struggling to find any photos of that park, other than the 3 or 4 photos that Solboy posted in the above link (thanks for posting those). such great memories!
