Put it up, tear it down

The Maloof Money Cup will be broadcast live on Fuel TV August 7th and 8th. So much for environmentally friendly skateboard contest facilities. I give these guys credit for donating the park in NYC earlier this year, but it’s one step forward, one step back. I believe the Orange County stop is a another temporary concrete facility that will be destroyed after the event. Sources tell us that there’s an actual permanent facility within a mile of this temporary one. Maybe it’s not up to par, but why not improve it, or god forbid, build another permanent one where it’s really needed. I hear this is supposed to pay homage or outright duplicate some famous spots. That volcano looks a little reminiscent of Sadlands, not that I’ve ever been there. See for yourself on the web cam.

  1. Its recyclable concrete and California Skateparks has this shit dialed. Every element on this course is a replica of very awesome skatespots from around the world. Each obstacle has a name- like the ‘Sadlands’ area.

  2. I’ve been bringing up the idea of permanent skateparks for contests for years. Most people tell me they think the biggest problem is the disconnect between the local government and the contest holder/builder, etc. Issues like who pays for the land, who maintains it after the contest, etc are what’s brought up the most. I seriously think if people got together and tried to bring contests to their towns and took care of that stuff ahead of time, it might be realistic to get parks built for a contest that stay there after it is over.

  3. oh yeah, i see the world famous set of 9 stairs with a handrail…man one of a kind.

  4. Similar, but not the same. I started because of Sadlands being a mere couple blocks from my dads house in Anaheim. Very quick, very steep and there wasn’t a runway to hit it straight.

Build the parks then leave ’em. Hear that Xgames? Maloof? whatever-extreme-bullshit-circus event? That will make a bigger impact then just putting up a tech deck banner.

    1. hear hear, building and donating permanent parks will promote the sport(s) for decades

‘recyclable concrete?’ that’s just greenwashing pr. they build the course without rebar so it’s easy to tear up and turn into gravel. all concrete is ‘recyclable’ in that way.

  7. Yeah, recyclable or not it is still an insane waste of energy and resources. Is the Navy sponsoring the Maloof as well as the Xgames? Like Grosso said, ‘Are you a part of the problem or the solution?’

Nice. Grosso’s candor is rad. Especially if Rock Star is smart enough to pick him up.
