Crappy skateboard of the month
Rip Skates was a (crappy) budget brand from Surrey Skateboards, a skateshop in the UK that exists since 1977. The shop in Surrey closed down, but you can still visit them online and buy their new stuff or check out the cool pictures of the good old days. The graphic on this deck looks great, the ‘monster clown’ killing the vert skater and destroying his ramp reminds me of some of the old Deathbox designs. Was it a reference to the death of vert in the late 80’s? Anyway, it was very unlikely that you would have become a good street skater with this complete! For sale on Gumtree for £5.
Brilliant! Those copers mallgrab’ed real nice.
They weren’t too crappy me and my brother both had one of these and they were as good as a Variflex. They board was heavy but once you stripped it down they performed well. We used to huck these off of flyoffs and learnt boardslides on them.
Where is this for sale for a fiver I have searched all over Gumtree for it. Let me know as I want it
I can’t find it neither, but I contacted the seller to see if he still has it …
Yep, had one of these ( albeit with a slightly different graphic ) in ’87 / ’88. They were indeed a UK based equivalent of Variflex. Not too bad for the price, but I did crack the deck and both baseplates. Fun RIP fact; They once issued a “pro model” for a british skater named Ian Scudds, aka Davross. Allegedly he never received a single board or any royalties!
My first board was a RIP Charly Gnarly, and it was good as a starter board, way better than the Turbo IIs of the time, and I preferred it to my friends Variflex. I upgraded to a second hand Salba witchdoctor and kept the RIP trucks and wheels until I ripped the core out of one powersliding down a hill. I even kept the deck for a while, sanded it down, and added my own graphics to make it my ‘pro model’. It didn’t make it look any better. Fond memories of these, almost bid on a set of RIP wheels on ebay a couple of weeks ago.
Haha, crappier than a Turbo II is impossible, my first board was a Turbo II ‘Aloha Hawaii’…
Aloha Hawaii how much money???
These decks are Rad!, I’ve been looking for the Beach Dude graphic for years!
If anyone can help I would be very grateful??
