Skate News Roundup – Week 1 October 2006

What week of the year is this? Someone comment us the 411, would ya? This is the part of the story where we start giving you a weekly recap of news links including those that didn’t warrant their own full post. Dull dull dull. I know. Some of it is interesting, I swear.

From the Seattle Times: City Hopes to Expand Skateboard Options

For skateboarders looking to hone their skills in Seattle, it’s Ballard or bust. With the skatepark at Seattle Center scheduled to be torn down, the Ballard Bowl will be the only city-owned public space dedicated to skateboarding.

Hey Seattle! Quit tearing down the ones you already have!

From the Toronto Sun: Sports: The Last Word By Bill Lankhof:

They are the counter-culture of the pro sports world — rebels in sneakers and, someday soon, they are in danger of becoming as commercially viable as a Big Mac and fries. As skateboarders go, that’s great for the bank account but hell on wheels to your street cred.

Sellouts? Tell us something we don’t know.

From the Princeton Packet: West Windsor Skateboard Park Faces Delay

Township skateboarders will have to wait until May to show off their frontside nollies and primo stands in Community Park, officials said Monday.

Primo Stands? Frontside Nollies? Princeton Packet?

From the Santa Cruz Sentinel: Skateboarding Couple on Trading Spaces

Santa Cruz Skate Shop owners Danny and Taniya Keith and Rich and Annie Harris are featured on the TLC home improvement show ‘Trading Spaces.’ These two families, who are immersed in skateboard culture, trade rooms for redecorating. The show will also show skateboard footage. WHEN: 10 p.m. WHERE: TLC.

A slow news day.

From the October 5th issue of The Comet: Police Fund Skaters

SANDY Skating Association is better off to the tune of over £2,000 thanks to the Bedfordshire Police Authority. The authority presented a cheque for £2,220.75 to the association last week as part of their youth projects fund to help projects for young people aimed at keeping them safe and out of trouble. The money will be used to purchase skating equipment to help give coaching to four to 11-year-olds in Sandy on a one-to-one basis in basic skateboarding skills.

Yes, you read that right. Police giving money (about $4000) to skaters? I think that’s one of the signs of the apocalypse.

From the Wednesday Oct 4th issue of The Comet: Campus Skateboard Ban Upheld

At its October meeting, the Lawrence Traffic Safety Commission (TSC) voted unanimously to recommend that the Lawrence City Commission reject a request to change the ordinance banning skateboarding on the University campus. No one came to speak in favor of the change, but representatives of the Provost’s office and KU Public Safety argued for keeping the ban in place.

Nobody spoke in favor? OK all you lawrence Kansas skaters, organize! Head over to SPS a few tips on getting started. This guest opinion article seems sympathetic to the cause.

Delayed Skateparks:

In The West Seattle Herald and The Cowichan News Leader (Vancouver Island BC)

And covered elsewhere on Skate And Annoy:

From the October 5 edition of the Hertz Advertiser: Town Mayor Facing Disrepute Allegations

The local government watchdog is conducting a probe into allegations from Gillian Polding that Cllr John Chambers has been making life a misery for her son – claims which the Town Mayor has dismissed as a “fabrication”. Gillian said: “It’s really affected our family life and at times my son has been frightened to go outside.” She maintained it was a skateboard ramp her son built on their driveway which had upset Cllr Chambers.

Personal harassment from the Mayor! Now that’s public service. Original coverage.

From the Morning Call Online: City Cautions, But Won’t Ban Skateboarding – Recklessness is prohibited, but Allentown police say prohibition would be hard to enforce.

Allentown City Council voted Wednesday to reiterate the city’s prohibition against ”reckless skateboarding” but stopped short of enacting a citywide skateboarding ban.Residents of Carbon Street on the city’s south side came to council in June, complaining that groups of young men and teenagers were hanging out on their street, skateboarding recklessly, smoking and harassing residents… …and skateboarding at night remain prohibited under the ordinance.

I was going to make a “Cut and run – terrorists” joke but I can’t get over the fact that skateboarding appears to be banned at night! Original coverage
