Habitat alternative technologies

Interesting alternative construction methods over at Habitat.

Cork ply decks have a real cork sheet laminated to the top of the deck eliminating the need for grip tape. The cork is harvested from live trees in a sustainable manner and adhered with water based glues. These collectors decks are both fun to skate and easy on your shoes.

Besides cork ply, they’ve also got a hemp composite and a bamboo top ply… Although the web site mentions these technologies for the 2009 lineup, so no idea if this is still current.

– Thanks to Boy for the tip.

  • I have been thinking of a shark skin grip tape – totally politically and environmentally goofy, but very efficient. It has been used for centuries for such delicate things as sword or katana handles.
This grippy leather is called “Galuchat”, and it is famous among amateurs of nice shoes or watches.

I’ve always thought it would an interesting idea to have cork somewhere the middle to reduce vibration. This seems awesome though.

  • I wonder if they soak that cork.

Wow, nothing better to do on a sunny day than talk shit. Every single one of those boards sold and there will be a new series in shops soon.

I’ll pipe up if the trollery degenerates into a critique of something that was already determined to be dope two years ago. The cork has already spread to other brands, and I would frankly like to see it on a popsicle. The newest Habitats will be sick tho.
