Skate and Annoy: Daily

the skateable broom - aka Sweeper

New take on oldest joke in the book

I’d bet that practically the same day the name “sweeper” was coined, someone cracked the joke while cleaning off a ramp somewhere. You know, the one where you are sweeping out the flat or something and someone says “Hey, nice sweeper you just pulled!” I swear I thought I made that joke in with a picture post, but I can’t find it. Greg Baller of Freezine fame sent in some pictures of a board he made for a fundraiser. This is one of the all time great artsy fartsy concept boards.

From Greg:

The premise was a ride-able broom. The bristles were from a stiff street sweeping broom, and I inlaid them into a deck. I went with narrow trucks so that the broom surrounded the wheels like a hovercraft. Then they were trimmed to length, so that they did apply pressure as you rolled, so they actually swept.

If you went down a steep hill where you might normally get a speed wobble, the bristles acted as drag, and made the hill managable! And turns got a bit drifty if the bristles outpowered the trucks….
it was so funny to ride.

It sold for $350 at the gallery, and was part of a fundraiser for our skatepark’s construction. If you are like me, you probably keep a broom in your car trunk for sweeping out skate spots. I liked the idea of a rolling broom, even if it is just a gag.

Horizontal pics can be enlarged. Hey Greg, where are the construction pics? I’d like to see it in progress. How did you inlay those bristles?

  • sweep and destroy !

  • I love it! If a girl rides it will they call her a witch?

  • Indy’s were unavailable skinny enough at the time I made it, trust me, I tried!!
I wanted the trucks to be skinny, so that the bristles surrounded the wheels like a hydroplane.
The black wheels were to make them blend in with the bristles.
Artistic license prevailed over true function….

  • Indys and white wheels and I’m sold.

  • yeah there is, i’ll be out skating!

  • there’s now no excuse for not helping your lady keep the house clean.
