Switch Mongo upright dog
This is part of our never ending quest to bring you the best street skating coverage. Sure he stands upright and is riding switch, but he’s got no style! Animal retard or genius? Is that a third eye? You be the judge, after the jump.
Behind the Griptape
Grover’s Video Korner often reaches for greatness, but Rory Sheridan is like Icarus flying too close to the sun. Ok, that’s a bit much, but his Behind the Griptape skateboarding exposés are damned funny. They can be a little too drawn out, but as the second episode shows, he’s honing his craft and they are getting tighter. Good scripts, some decent acting, skateboards and copious onscreen beer bongs. What else could you ask for? Watch the videos after the jump. [Source: South of the North]
Chinese skateboarding. No controversy
Carhartt is a work wear company that for some reason has a large presence sponsoring skateboard events in Europe, but is invisible here in the USA. Invisible except for the fact that you’ll see a lot of Carhartt being worn by some of the crews actually building skateparks over here. Mongolian Tyres is a skate video of a Carhartt sponsored skate trip to Mongolia. It’s about 38 minutes of mostly street skating totally ghetto spots in China without a lot of attitude. Very refreshing. I don’t know any other details like release date etc, except that it’s worth the watch. Chompy, why aren’t you all over this? Watch the vid after the jump. Beware! I live!
Is inline skating back from the dead? Yes, according to the Press Enterprise story “Inline Skating Part of Action Sports Tour Lineup.” I’m not sure why that warrants the headline. it seems like only a few years ago that inline skating was dropped from the X-Games. So uh… kudos to the Dew AST for having it’s finger on the pulse of Extreme!™ youth trends so that the skateboarding community can heckle the booters instead of BMX guys or worse, each other. Exclusive video of the official promo video for inline skating after the jump. The crappy watermarked image that I couldn’t be bothered to fix in Photoshop is “courtesy” of All Posters, who claims that it has “pure color and exceptional detail that is suitable for museum or gallery display.”
GVK#21: My Great Movie, Part 1
So Here it is the long lost version of “My Great Movie” assembled in late 04 early 05. Its an epic saga of a group skaters that had only 2 parks to ride with in an hours drive, not like today where we have 5 parks with in twenty minuets of my house. and 10 with in an hour thank gawd. Bonus film “Washed Up Old Vert Skaters.” A title bestowed by some street skater trying to ollie to tail at the old beaverton ramp while I was in the middle of a run. – GVK Off!
Lupe Fiasco – Kick Push
Hip hop skateboarders? Now I’ve seen everything. No seriously, I think this guy does a better job than most singing about skateboarding without making it sound silly.
Groovy times.
Nobody has been able to successfully incorporate skateboarding into a fictional movie as a major plot device without making it corny. The 1978 movie Skateboard was probably the first attempt. It stars teen heartthrob Leif Garret in his pre coke binge and DUI days and also features Tony Alva as Tony Bluetile. Here’s a short clip of the archetypal sketchy outsider trying to hustle some teenage kids to form a skateboard team and make a quick buck. It’s very amusing, more so if you imagine our own Grover from GVK as the lead. The last time he tried to talk some teenagers into his van to go skateboarding he had to register his name with the neighborhood as an “offender.” Watch the clip after the jump.
Another Blind skater that doesn’t ride for Blind.
A couple of months ago we posted about blind skateboarder Jennifer Tissot, and now we have another. The Chicago Sun Times has an article with a title straight from Cliché Headlines 101 about another blind skateboarder. What else, but “Skater’s blind ambition.” Duh! The article is pretty straight forward and short. 14 year old Tommy Carroll who lives in the suburbs of Chicago, went blind in both eyes at the age of two. He enjoys other sports like cross country running, and is on a local skate team, Agent Skateboards. Check out the team. If that is the Jerret Barry (Jarret Berry?) then Agent has the lock on Extreme™! minority team members. One of the more interesting notes (besides Tommy, the blind skateboarder) is that his parents are the ones who “helped steer him into skateboarding, figuring it was something he could master.” That’s a pretty progressive attitude, considering a lot of parents of seeing children don’t want their kids skating. The best part of the article is the video link that actually shows Tommy carving around, doing a nose pivot on the coping and even catching air. Thanks to Mike Timble for the tip. FIRETRUCK – iretr = !
Skate Daily posted about a contest at the Chili Bowl. Thrasher has the video clip. I thought this Josh Mattson Miller Flip was sick but wait ’till you see the frontside 540 done properly.
Rare video on G.E.F.’s site
Glen Friedmans has a bunch of videos of punk rock and Z-Boys era skateboarding on Burning Flags. Black Flag TV appearances, Dogtown skaters, there’s even video of Ian McKaye and Jeff Nelson skateboarding at the Kenter Canyon banks. Mostly crappy quality video but some cool old footage.
