Ed Benedict goes to Newline/California Skateparks
California Skateparks & New Line Skateparks are the team that the Evaluation Committee selected. Purchasing is approaching them with regards to signing the contracts.
Happy accident.
Time to break out the camera for action shots again. It’s been almost three months, but EPM’s been TCB so it’s not like I was missed. Abusrd! I hauled my injured ass (shoulder and hip, actually) out to Pier to take pictures of old men skating vert. Heard I missed Childress, Drehobol and Kanights. Still, I didn’t get the camera out until I was walking back to the car. I noticed Louis because he (politely) asked me to get my 2 year old kid out of his way so he could hit the wave banks on the sidewalk. I snapped a few pics. I must have bumped the mode dial on the camera to automatic because I have a slow shutter speed and unintentional motion blur. I was too busy trying to get a good composition with curves in the walkway and the skating without getting in Louis’ way. Plus my kid was kind of crying, making my wife crabby… Calgon take me away! Must focus mentally. Cropping? That’s for wussies. See some full frame pics after the jump.
The spice of life
That’s right. variety is the spice of life. We’re looking to add another point of view to Skate and Annoy, something we’ve heard is called street skating, as implausible as that sounds, which is not to be confused with street-style, which is being, er, uh, practiced in the shot above that I got from the Chitown Shred archives. But seriously folks. We need to cover the grittier side of skating. I love skate parks, but there’s a different vibe with skating something found as opposed to something made for skating. Help us out, and get in contact if you think you can be our man on the street. Or woman. Geographic locale is not an issue.
Art Appreciation
The setting: The Riverwalk in Naperville Illinois. The time: About 1984. How many times can you say “I was the first person to ever skate this?” Now everyone skates, that’s getting harder and harder to say. I go back to Naperville to visit family every other year or so. Now they’ve got a crappy prefab skatepark, but back then there was not much of a scene. I have to assume Naperville’s current park is crappy because I’ve only looked at it from the car. That town has money to burn but somehow they got suckered into a bunch of wooden ramps on a concrete slab. Larger versions and a little more about the new skate park after the jump.

Sometimes you skate a pile of crap
Sometimes you skate a pile of crap, not because you have to, but because it’s fun. OK, only about enough fun for five minutes.
Vert skating is over, street skating is over, downhill is over
…skateboarding with wheels and trucks is over. This is apparently from a Denver shop video. I’m sure street skaters look at this guy the way vert skaters react to the Danny Way stunts but then again, I don’t understand modern street skating.
Metals
A follow up to a follow up. First Boston Hospital, then Turtles, and now Metals. More pics from this local Boston spot shot circa 1987 after the jump.
Klamath Falls Irrigation Ditches
Yeah, I’m from Klamath Falls. I know it is hard to believe that a man of my magnitude and exception hails from such a small podunk town. But that isn’t the subject of this article. The subject of this article are these irrigation ditches that lay in the ground some 10, or so, miles outside of town
Bluegrass Aggression Session 1988
There once was an NSA contest in Louisville Kentucky called the Bluegrass Aggression Session, and nobody came to watch it. Somehow they let me on floor to take pictures during the practices and prelims. There were other guys from organizations like Lapper Magazine, Stuf, and even a certain GBJ. There was a monster vert ramp and a street course as well. On the left we have Eddie Reategui, and on the right we have the same obstacle, different viewpoint. Skater unknown. Full frame and enlargements after the jump.
Newberg extras.
This is not the same Newberg local Jason. This guy used to hang out at Newberg on a regular basis, and he’s a VW fan, or was at least until he sold his to buy turntables. Impetuous youth. Another pic after the jump.
