Solitary Arts recycles
Just like House of Neil, I have a major issue with people who cut up old skate magazines (or Life, or anything else, really) and try to sell the individual ads out of context. Plundering history for a modest monetary gain is needlessly destructive. Frankly, it pisses me off. Then again, I have been known to get bent out of shape about stupid things. You might expect me to be similarly upset with Solitary Arts and their Traveler Deadstock boards, but instead I am green with envy. The folks at Solitary arts managed to get their hands on a limited quantity of NOS 70’s era wooden plank style skateboard decks. They’ve gone ahead and hand routered the bottoms so they could mount their own inlay in place, then fitted them with new trucks and their own retro styled wheel to make a board that is half reproduction, half NOS, and all genius. It doesn’t violate my anti-desecration of history policy because these unnamed plank boards are a dime a dozen, from a time when the technology of skateboard decks was easily accessible to anyone with a jigsaw and some sandpaper. Nobody wants to buy them on eBay, I know because…
Camptown ladies sing this song, Doodah
From the sketchy free online translation, I gather that fashion photographers Claudia Knoepfel and Stefan Indlekofer shot some supermodels (that I don’t recognize…) for a series of skateboards put out by Swiss skateshop Doodah. By the way, this is Friday T&A on S&A.
Concrete Disciple wheels on Spitfire
Concrete Disciples has their own signature wheel on Spitfire. Seriously? Fug! We’re still working on our signature deal, but until then if you send us your wheels, I’ll take a black sharpie and write “Skate and Annoy” on them for free.
Girl Plank Series
The Planks series of graphics by Girl Skateboards is an idea that is so simple I kick myself for not thinking of it. I saw a kid with the Koston board set up at Pier Park over the weekend, and it looked even cooler with the addition of real trucks on top of Ithe graphic. The image above is from their online catalog, but it’s not quite big enough to give you an idea of how great they look. I scoured the Interwebs™ for bigger pictures and managed to find four out of the six in the series. If anyone at Girl reads this, how about sending some pics?
Frida T&A on S&A: Control and Vivid Girls
Canadian manufacturer Control Skateboards has licensed the likenesses of adult film actresses from Vivid Videos. The series includes Vivid Girls (L-R) Sunny Leone, Nikki Jayne, Hanna Hilton and Meggan Mallone . It’s supposed to be a limited edition run, but they are priced like normal boards. In fact, they appear to be on a bit of a closeout in some locations. I wonder if they aren’t selling as well because Control doesn’t have the same distribution as the bigger brands. [Source: Tacky]
Parents sue school over dork lessons
Parents in Arizona are suing the Gilbert school system over injuries sustained when he fell off a wave board that was being used as part of a physical education class at his junior high school. Plimpton and Denton allege Mark will have permanent physical and emotional disabilities, disfigurement, humiliation and impairment due to the incident. No word whether other students asked to ride the device will participate in the humiliation part of the lawsuit.
Biothane, meet Ecothane
Satori Movement is joining Sector 9 in the alternative-based urethane market, but it looks like Satori has raised the bar a little. These wheels combine a core made out of recycled plastic with a riding surface made out of 50% bio oils, and are guaranteed against flat spots. If you recall, Sector 9 doesn’t name the amount of soy-based urethane in their product. Satori doesn’t specifically say it uses soy, referring to vegetable oils instead, so maybe these wheels smell like french fries! You can find out when the wheels become available in February. Check out Satori Movement for more details. We’re running out of adjectives for environmentally friendly urethane compounds. I should trademark GreenThane, EnvirotThane, EarthoThane…
Smay’s new model
Our skate buddy Smay, the face of Rebel Skates for so many years, has been working with Knuckleheads clothing and they made a doll that they named after him. Where’s his little skateboard and does the doll have tattoos?
Beat ’em at their own game
I got an email with some computer renders from Team Pain that made me think they were dabbling with some prefab skatepark elements: Team Pain will be presenting their newest product line for the first time at the January 09 Surf Expo. Bringing a completely new feel to the show with some unique and artistic structures made from both hand poured concrete or solid steel! If you want to be one of the first to experience these new pieces, all you need to do is make it to the Expo and the course will be open to anybody who wants to skate. I thought I’d get some more info before I made the post since there were bound to be questions. UPDATE: Added video.
Inkjet printing on concrete
Won’t your client’s logo look great printed on the skatepark? Or, we could take pictures of kids at the skatepark and then print the images on the skatepark, then we could get the kids to skate on it and take a picture of that… A method for printing digital images on concrete. Not much more info about this but I got it from Design Spotter.
