Schmitt Stix for your Phone
Another MapleXO and Grove collaboration (see iPhone case), this time just the back piece. 100% post consumer waste provided by Paul Schmitt. Looks sharp, but not actually sharp.
It’s going to be fun to try it later
Björn Holm of Finland made a surfboard out of recycled skateboards. It’s the shell only so it’s probably not as heavy as it looks. I cracked up after watching the video, it’s almost like a SNL Digital Short. Everything is so serious, and there’s all the ice, and all of the sudden it’s over and the poor guy hasn’t even gotten to ride it yet. [Source: Hypbeast via Freshngood.]
Boardworld
I envision a post apocalyptic future where gangs of longboarders maraud the outskirts of a dying civilization, raiding the unprepared and the weak, pillaging and plundering for the only currency left from the the modern world’s halcyon days, the recycled skateboard. Seriously, soon enough broken boards are going to become almost as valuable as a new board. Shwood makes sunglasses out of old skatebaords, something we’ve recently seen before, but this incarnation is constructed in a different manner. Shwood is out in the burbs of Portland, and fittingly, local filmer/photog Joe Stevens put together a video that shows the skateboard pre-demise, post-reincarnation and everything in between.
What else is left?
I thought Maple XO’s IPhone cases were the pinnacle in recycled skateboard chic, but I have to say these glass frames by brothers Baptiste and Gianni Vuerich are the new winners. I’d wear these if I could afford them. No idea how much they cost, but they have to be expensive. I found them while tracing down a tip from Michel Skart Poulin on a coat hanger these guys made. I kept trying to find a web site for these guys, and running across other items they made. The Vuerich’s are some talented mofo’s but they don’t seem to be able to hold down a web site.
Nils Inne recycles too
We’ve seen a lot of the same items tat Nils Inne makes out of recycled skateboards done before, like slingshots, sandals, but here’s at least one new one, a steadicam mount. Nils’ unique and consistent style makes his works stand out. Check it out L’atelier de Nils. [Source: Sk8.net]
Skateboard wheel earrings from Maple
The recycled skateboard material arms race is heating up. People use them to make art, pens, wallets, stools, lamps, office dividers, shoes, and yes, jewelry. There isn’t much being done with used wheels. I believe someone is using manufacturing wheels with recycled post consumer urethane, I’ll have to hunt that down. In the meantime, here’s a video from Portland’s own Maple XO, featuring Lindsay Jo’s earrings made from recycled skateboard wheels.
Art of Board
Used skateboards are getting to be quite a commodity. It used to be you were a poser if you just carried your skateboard instead of riding it. Now I feel like poser because I’m not making stuff out of old skateboards. Art of Board recycles skateboards for furniture and a bunch of other vague things that they don’t really explain, other than to say that they provide commercial/residential interiors, retail environments, display and design, furniture and artwork. They are launching a program called I Ride. I Recycle. to collect boards for recycling at skateshops across the country. UPDATE: Art of Board answers some of your questions: – Thanks to Rick MacDonald for the tip.
Haroshi Harvest
Skateboarding is a big deal in Japan and like most skateboarders in the world, Japanese artist Haroshi had a pile of broken decks lying around. Too attached to the boards to toss them in the trash, he collected his boards and unless he breaks a few boards a week the ones of his community and turned them into sculptures and accessories such as necklaces and key chains.
Boardgames
When he’s not busy skating, Jason Greene makes things out of old skateboards. Yeah, so does your uncle, my neighbor, and my sister’s dog, but I’ve never seen a slingshot made from a skateboard. Tops, maybe, but not a slingshot. Chairs, yes, but made from several and not one small sized for a little future ripper. I wish I would have thought of that one for my kids. Actually, my two year old might still fit on that. Check it out on Etsy.
DIY bushings for winos
Me, I swear by my Bones Bushings, but if I ever find myself in pinch, I could follow the advice over at Sa Ka Roulé and repurpose some of those newfangled plastic corks and make some bushings. In fact, maybe I’ll start building up a reserve of them tonight. I was saving these things for a while, I thought there must be something I could do with them, but this idea never crossed my mind.
