iMove Downhill Action
I accidentally fired up iMovie over the weekend and was greeted with a welcome screen that featured skateboarding. It’s the first time I’ve launched it after upgrading to Mavericks. Curious that the last version of iMovie was called iMovie 11, and this one is called iMovie 10. Mini mavericks review after the jump.
Wine about the industry
Special 40th Anniversary Santa Cruz Skateboards wine made by Joseph George Wines, and available for about the same price as a reissue board. NHS has really taken the quality of their corporate labeled schwag up a notch. – Thanks to Berlin Dave for the tip.
Love it or Levis
Levis wants in on skateboarding. They’ve got a skateboarding collection, a collaboration with Thrasher, and a half baked campaign called Make Your Mark or possibly What’s your approach that features Natas Kaupas. I’ve got nothing against Levi’s. It’s a privately owned company that still makes (a small percentage) some clothing in the USA. Their sweatshop labor controversy is well behind them. They’ve used the Clash in commercials, why not Natas? OK, I do have a beef. If you’re going to post an “interview” with Natas, at least make sure it has a little substance. If you check out the accompanying video, it makes even less sense. I hear him talking, but it’s all chopped up, and in the end it’s like he’s not saying anything.
Mercedes Benz – Silver Slipstreams
It’s a weird, weird world we live in, where Mercedes Benz thinks it advantageous to make “a beautifully filmed video pitting man against machine these unlikely four-wheeled allies tango at high-speed on the majestic Franschhoek Pass in the Western Cape.” Are they targeting the desire of older rich males to be associated with speed, youth and danger? It was filmed for Mercedes Benz South Africa, which might explain why there’s no “Do not try this” warning at the bottom of the screen for dumb Americans. There is a “filmed under controlled conditions” message at the end. The rider is Decio Lourenco, and you can read more on Mercedes Benz Life. Because apparently owning a Mercedes Benz is a lifestyle, and not a sport. – Thanks to Matthijs for the tip.
About to rock and roll, WWE salutes you
So now you can get official WWE skateboards with wrestling pro graphics, or maybe it’s been available for while and I just wasn’t aware because there is no Dynamic Dudes model. [Source: Hell Skate]
Uppercut Deluxe
Uppercut Deluxe makes old style men’s grooming products such as pomade. They offer a collector’s box that contains a special edition Z-Flex skateboard that acts as a stand for these products when not being ridden. The brand was built by the creative brains, passion and hard work of Luke Newman and Steve Purcell, childhood friends with a love for barbering, surf and skate. Newman discovered the world of barbering while staying in Portland Oregon with a friend building skateparks after his school years. OK, I’ll admit I experienced my usual skeptical, negative backlash when I first saw this. But then, after reading a little, I thought if I had a business, why wouldn’t I try to incorporate the things I love if I could? Once, as a college dropout living in a college town “band house,” myself and a bunch of my roommates decided we all wanted “50’s head” right there, and right then. Trouble was, it was after the bars had closed. We scoured every open store in a 50 mile radius trying to find some pomade. Eventually we found some, probably at a truck stop, and we proceeded to give ourselves “50’s head.” We looked bad – instead…
Bread Dude
This is Hawaiian Grill’s “Bread Dude.” Bread Dude? Seriously? OK. Wait, really? Bread Dude grill buns. I’m trying to imagine whose blood had more illicit chemicals in it, the person who came up with the idea, or the person who green lit it. – Thanks to John Aguilar for the photo.
Cat Sk8
Lot’s of cats and other animals around here lately, especially cats. This one spotted at Forever 21. – Thanks to Stephanie “I swear I don’t shop at Forever 21” Murdock for the tip.
Calgon, take me away
Feeling stressed? Grab your bath salts and some candles, drag you subwoofer into the bathroom and enjoy a soothing bubble bath while watching this latest (actually old) fashion look book from Koch shot at a very lovely skatepark. No more frontside grinds, release your aggression. Let it go… UPDATE: Added some retina-relaxing images.
Targeting consumers
I’ve walked by this on the way into Target at least 20 times I’m sure. I actually like the art direction here, all things considered. It’s pleasing to look at from a distance. Does anyone remember Target Video? They sent us a videotape in the 80’s, some random punk performance, I can’t remember who. I believe their entire catalog was early videotapes of live punk shows in and around San Francisco. They were the ones that recorded the Cramps at a state mental institution. I don’t recall if any money changed hands or not, although I have a vague recollection of actually placing a Target Video advert in an S&A print zine, so maybe they pay us. Target Video still has a blog going, I wonder what they’re up to.
