And there’s really carving. Sa ka roulé has a lot of pictures combined with a lot of words that I can’t read either. It’s a downhill board that looks sharp, heavy, and fast. This is at least the third post I’ve done on skateboards carved out of a solid block of wood, but it’s not the last. I’ve got another one in language I can read coming up shortly. A German cat named Tobias Megerle has commissioned traditional wood carvers in Mombai, India to make ornamental skateboards instead of furniture for a change, and boy do those sorry guys look miserable. He plans on showing them in an exhibit at a gallery called the Loft at Lower Parel. Megerle said he had been fascinated with the craft but wanted to find a way to showcase it that wasn’t so stuffy and boring. Here’s why he chose skateboards: …the good old skateboard. There are art boards galore, but these hand carved whimsical creatures are meant to be ridden. Ridden carefully, of course, but ridden. Doug McKee AKA Naty Shred rides his, and repairs them too. They aren’t cheap, but they are one of a kind. The bird actually flaps it’s wings when it rolls. Impractical? Sure, but it takes a joyless soul not to smile at these.
