Skate and Annoy: Daily
Hoverboard Holly
Here’s a hoverboard shot from a Photoshop contest for “Coolest toy ever” on Worth 1000. I thought it might be one of mine at first, but it turned out to be an EPM shot of Holly Lyons from Rich’s 2007 Trifecta Lincoln City coverage. Rich’s pics have been getting poached by the Photoshoppers lately, and even though it must be somewhat annoying, this is a pretty funny end result. – Thanks to Sheltered Productions for the tip.
Burnside Nontest Benefit for expansion
Burnside nontest and fundraiser for expansion of the Burnside project, going on Saturday the 18th. We must be on the official kook list because nobody asked us to donate or promote this event. Oh well. Little known fact: Mark Conahan was the one who secured the noise permit for the event yesterday afternoon. DJ Red and and lots of skating, loud music, general shenanigans. Full flyer after the jump.
Happy Valley plans
Taking influence from a skipping stone, this design focuses on a rhythm of circular plazas that are linked through paving and skate-boarding features. The design offers features for riders of every skill-level and style. The paving pattern consists of a large saw-cut concrete pattern within a circular paver banding that helps de? ne space and add visual appeal. The first meeting for the Happy Valley, Oregon skatepark saw three different Newline concepts presented, and this is the design that was the overwhelming favorite. The plan now is to refine it to “to serve as many different levels of skateboarders as possible.” The argument about street plazas vs. tranny and out of state (and Country) contractors is moot here, so please don’t waste anyone’s time by flogging that dead horse. The Clackamas County planners would do well to talk to Portland about the Ed Benedict project. I have heard that when it came time to actually build the park, there were numerous delays and attempts to get more money out of the project than was set forth by the agreements in the contract.
Friday T&A on S&A: The Burnquist Samba
From the sketchy translation I got, this was at some mega ramp event that ended a week long celebration the history of skateboarding in Brazil, or not. For our purposes, it’s Bob Burnquist and Jake Brown (back turned) dancing with some socially and culturally acceptable scantily clad Carnaval-type gals on the mega ramp in Brazil, thanks to the web site Skatecultura.
Chingaucousy Skatepark – Brampton, Ontario
This is a shot of an amazing looking collection of concrete at Chingaucousy Skatepark in Brampton, Ontario, as designed and constructed by Spectrum Sk8parks. Soak it all in, then watch some video after the jump.
Happy Valley Skatepark
Time for more input on the Happy Valley skatepark in Clackamas County, Oregon. We must have missed a meeting or two, because from the looks of the tiny renderings, they appear to have chosen a designer already… Street plaza city, Newline? The meeting is Wednesday, April 29, 2009, from 5-7 p.m. at Sunnyside Elementary school on 13401 SE 132nd Avenue in Clackamas, OR. No word on whether the infamous Happy Valley back biter (seen above, lower right) will be allowed in the park. This is as good an excuse as any to post some more photos form the Happy Valley pool you love to hate.
California Freestyling Slot Car
I found this a site that sold scale model electric railroads and slot cars. I subscribed to their print catalog in hopes that they would feature it with more pictures, but they haven’t yet, and it’s been a couple years. I was hoping to be able to read the descriptions under the inset photos on the top of the box. It’s supposed to be HO scale, but I think that would make those skateboarders something 12 feet tall in real life. The product name is a throwback to the time when skateboarding still was inextricable from the state of California. Slot car racing still appeals to me, but somehow I don’t think It would be as fun with goofy looking tiny skateboarders instead of little muscle cars. Yours for anywhere from $96 to $26.
Oldenzaal Snake Run
There’s an old 70’s snakerun park in the Het Hulsbeek recreation park located in Oldenzaal, Netherlands. For the past handful of years they’ve been holding an annual contest series there called “Oerend Hard” that looks like it’s more of a weekend festival of skateboarding and fun than a strict contest. Events typically include a standard downhill race, boardercross, jump ramp, best trick, and something you never, ever see anymore, the two man catamaran. The Netherlands Skateboard Federation, or Skateboard Federatie Nederlandis trying to have the park designated as a national historical monument, if for no other reason than they claim it is essentially the last preserved skatepark in Europe from the 70’s that is still in widespread use. I know there are still some 70’s skatepark remnants in the U.K., so perhaps the key phrase is “widespread use.” I don’t think the park is in any eminent danger of being destroyed, they are just being proactive about it. Check out the press release presentation that includes photos through the years, including the construction. It made the news, but I can’t understand a word they are saying, and it’s buried in a long video. I did find a nice video run…
Jason Lee Airwalk Promo from 1995
Check out this 1995 Airwalk Shoes video featuring Jason Lee. There’s a lot of filler, but he skateboarding eventually kicks in. This was probably used for trade shows and the like. You can see some of Jason Lee’s early character work here. Who shot this?
Jeremy Fish is Superfishal
I spotted this Bones parody shirt by Jeremy Fish at the Umbrella Market. Parodies of old skate logos are a dime a dozen, but I like this one. Bonus footage of a real life fish skateboard after the jump, thanks to a tip from reader Dylan.
