Please don’t skate in the Pool
“The Pool” is a temporary installation in a public swimming pool in London. Nike 6.0, the action sports (excluding skateboarding) division set this up for BMX action. If you’re a UK reader of this site who doesn’t have a bike, they’ll even loan you one. This idea is… interesting. I wonder if they’d let someone skate it? I know, skateboarders are always glomming on to the blood sweat and tears of the the action sports industry. When are we going to get it together and make something for ourselves? The Dagenham Swimming Pool sessions end June 12th. That’s one massive temporary structure. – Thanks to Seth Levy for the tip. [Source: Curated Mag]
Deckades
Shiner distribution in England is opening up their vaults and having a deck show. The rumor is that they kept at least one of every deck that ever went through there. The show is running for a month at Howies in Bristol. Opening day is Saturday, April 17th.
Random Hood River Shot
This random Hood River shot comes from Carl Warren, who invites you to enlarge-o-rama.
The Carvells: Part 2, and Magnum Bonum
In the dark days leading up to the apocalypse of Skate and Annoy’s web meltdown I featured the Carvells video for L.A. Run. Well, of course that led me to do some further investigating on the internet, and by “investigating,” I obviously meant draining my Paypal account by having a record shipped from the U.K.. In the meantime, House of Neil uncovered a contemporary (at the time) cover of L.A. Run by the Swedish band Magnum Bonum. And yes, it’s in Swedish.
They climb above ground and then attack
Mole men. Mo-oh-olemen. This is supposed to be a skatepark built in an old railway tunnel in Petersfield, England, but so far the only mention of of it I can find is that it was built by Nike 6.0 for some BMX contest. No, this is not the only underground tunnel skatepark in the UK.
Friday T&A on S&A: Front Magazine
Front magazine features “Britain’s fittest girls.” The latest issue tells readers to “Put on your kneepads, take out your shiny helmet and do some serious grinding as Rosie and Hettie go skate!” Errr, yeah. Rosie and Hettie seem more interested in other activities actually. I’m going to go out on a limb and call them, ahem, posers! Yes, I am that witty! Front is a carbon copy of any one of the many young men’s hipster lifestyle pinup magazines, except that it’s more NSFW than the typical U.S. fare. – Thanks to Aaron Shims fro the tip. Imitation and flattery, laziness
Aero, a candy bar brand popular in the UK, filmed an commercial spot with Bob Burnquist skating at the Lake Cunningham skate park with the bowls filled with brown balloons to resemble the bubbles in the chocolate. It looks great, trouble is, it’s an exact copy of the same concept that was actually shot here in at Portland’s D.O.S.. Ignorance is going to be hard to claim, considering Apple Computer is currently showing the original video in some of their in-store loops for Apple TV. Of course there is a chance that the originators might be getting paid too. Watch the video after the jump. UPDATE: Added for making of interviews. Wallasey seafront, Fall ’84
House of Neil sent me a couple pictures of him skating on the Wallasey (UK) seafront in the fall of 1984. The weather looks ominous. Are there tank traps on the other side of that wall? I love looking at grainy old skate photos. What board are you riding there Neil? Larger versions after the jump.
Bogtown Boyz
Bogtown Boyz is a vintage slide show featuring 149 pictures of most if not all of the historic UK skatespots featured in the excellent documentary Rollin’ Through The Decades. OK, I haven’t fact checked this since I haven’t watched Rollin’ in a while, but the names are familiar, Meanwhile Gardens, Rolling Thunder, Romford. A rare construction photo as well. I still have to make it through all the shots. It’s a Flash player, so it’s a bit less responsive than straight HTML, but you can sit back and let it play. The only thing missing is volume control for that Tony Alva vs. Jay Adams song, which is great, but tedious after the third time in a row. That tune was a blind link on SkateDaily quite awhile back, I still haven’t been able to find out who the band is.
Taking the Power Back: One Man’s Quest for Light
“I think that we should be men first, and subjects afterward. It is not so desirable to cultivate a respect for the law, so much as for the right.” -Henry David Thoreau, Civil Disobedience, 1849 On August 29th, Derek Anderson (Mark Conahan’s age) committed a breach of peace when he scaled a 300-foot crane located in the beer garden of the Doghouse Public House. This act of civil disobedience was an aim to shed some light on a particular subject: the Dudhope Skatepark, pictured above courtesy of Google Maps user ihatetechnology, in Westport, Dundee, UK.
