Oversized Rob Dyrdek
Rob dyrdek has an obsession with world records. He’s been goofing around with an oversized skateboard for his MTV show Fantasy Factory. At first I thought this was the same board we featured here back in 2007. In fact, it almost looks smaller than the ones the Michigan enginerds built. The guys who built said they had a possible high profile buyer in line, but weren’t allowed to say who. I looks like the trucks are different for sure. The Michigan model was based on Seismic trucks, this one appears to be more conventional. Still, they don’t show the construction phase, they could have easily swapped out the giant trucks… One thing that is interesting, the references make no mention of “world’s biggest,” just greatest. Remember kids, Swank stared this whole thing. While were at it, Drydek has written a skateboarding movie called Street Dreams that is supposed to be released at an unknown date in 2009. The film is already completed, and stars some familiar names like Rob Dyrdek, Paul Rodriguez Jr., Ryan Sheckler, Compton Ass Terry, and Ryan Dunn. The plot is about a Midwest skateboarder trying to go pro, and all the non-flowing parents, bitchy girlfriends, skate harassment…
Hudson Hawk Shark
Joesf sent in some more video captures, this time from Hudson Hawk, circa 1991. I remember this scene vaguely. They used skateboards to roll past some bad guys quietly. I don’t know who made the Shark model, but it’s Guh-narly!
Another You
Joesf Heffner sent in a screen grab from the 1991 Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor film Another You. I watched the trailer and I can’t figure out how the road warrior on skateboard fits in. Looks like they chopped off the front of the board and attached a cow catcher, possibly even painted some 215’s blue. That board’s been actually used for more than just a prop.
MIke V (and others) in Mall Cop.
Mike V has a supporting role as one of the bad guys in the movie Paul Blart: Mall Cop, and he’s pimping it hard on his web site. He’s go the trailer, a couple previews, three TV appearances and and some production stills on his web site. Mike did more than just stunts, he’s a real character in the movie. One TV commercial for Mall Cop shows a split second of skateboarding. I figured it was not a big part of the movie. But apparently, the “bad guys” are all terrorists who happen to be good at extreme sports… Good thing is a comedy and not xXx. Sounds corny? According to Vallely in an Buzzine interview: More importantly, Vallely said James and the entire production crew went out of their way to understand the perspective of skateboarders and BMX riders. “The most important thing for us is that everyone wanted to this right,” the skateboarding veteran said. “Usually people don’t get skateboarding. The stunt team and production team learned a lot from me, but I also learned a lot from them in terms of how to work on a Hollywood movie.” Who esle is in it? Jason Ellis, Rick Thorne,…
One more thing to be made in China
Not only are many big name skateboards manufactured in China, now they are going to start making our extreme sports genre films there too. CounterCulture Independent Filmmakers’ Resource, has the following oportunity listed: Wanted Screenplays with a Skateboard Theme to shoot in China Budget is 1.5 million. Investor is a skateboard champion and wants to produce a feature in Shanghai with a skateboard theme. Big question, who is the “skateboard champion?” I accidentally caught a Chinese action film on cable that has big chase scene that takes place on mountain boards. I forget the name of it, but it’s probably at least three years old. – Thanks to Tito Porrata for the tip.
Skateboarders not skateboarding on TV
First up, Mark Gonzales in a Nissan commercial. Funny thing is, when I saw this commercial the very first time I kept expecting a skateboard, but it never materialized. Something about the commercial exuded a skateboarding vibe, or a similar sense of fun. I didn’t recognize the Gonz the first time because he was completely out of context, and quite frankly I didn’t pay attention to it after the first viewing. That thirty second commercial skip button is great. Watch the spot after the jump. – Thanks to Seth Berg for the tip. Next up, not one, but two Stacy Peralta items. Did you know he was the one who made the Burger King commercial titled “Whopper Virgins?” Well, neither did I, but Fuel TV did. They implied that the skateboarding community might have something to say about it, Im not sure why though, because he was a filmmaker hired to do a job, not a guy appearing as a skateboarder in a commercial for say… a video game.
Stepbrothers credits
Joesf sent in this screencap from the credits of the movie Stepbrothers. There’s not much to say here, except I’ve got a busy day and this is about all you are getting. See it larger after the jump, if you must. Nice plastic trucks. I wonder if they had to have someone’s assistant break this thing in on the parking lot to make it look worn.
Deathbowl to Downtown on tour
Rick Charnoski and Coan “Buddy” Nichols’ newest film is titled Deathbowl to Downtown, and it’s on tour right now. Tomorrow night (October 1st) for example, it’s being shown in Portland at Cinema 21. As we mentioned before, a certain skate blog may (or may not, I ‘haven’t seen it yet) show in the credits. I’d still go watch it even if that weren’t the case. I love their films, and so do you. What time? I don’t know, it’s not listed. As soon as I find out, I’ll post it. – Thanks BK. Cinema 21 Theater – 616 NW 21st Ave – Portland, OR 97209 Plan B Bar – 1305 SE 8th Ave – Portland, OR 97214
Don’t have a cow, have a Squishee
Bart Simpson, naked on a skateboard. It’s a Simpsons Movie promotional tie in with 7-11. In case you aren’t aware, Bart rides a skateboard while naked in the film. It’s a plastic relief with a magnet that attaches to a special Slurpee straw. Certainly less expensive than this bit of movie memorabilia. Close up after the jump. The shirt is just something random from a hipster boutique.
Batman skateboard connections
There’s a new animated Batman movie being released on DVD to coincide with the hype of the live action feature with skateboarding actor Heath Ledger. Batman: Gotham Night has an opening sequence chock full of skateboarding. There was a pre-release rip on the web, but surprise, surprise, it’s been removed. Speaking of copyright infringement, remember the short lived Batman skateboard from Vision? The image above is from the Warner Video where they only show a second or two. If you really want to, you can see it after the jump. – Thanks to Joesf Heffner for the tip
