Worse News Bears
Did anybody see the 2005 remake of Bad News Bears? Anybody? Anybody? I wonder if there is any skateboarding in the movie. I believe skateboarding surpassed baseball in youth practitioner #’s some time in the new millennium, so nowadays if you want to be an individual and be a rebel, you gotta join an organized sports team.
Machotaildrop in Portland
Friday night only at the Clinton Street Theater. All ages show at 7pm. 21 and over at 9pm. It looks good if you are into a Wes Anderson/Spike Jonez/Michel Gondry vibe with skateboarding as a plot device to boot. Might be the first time a skateboard drama doesn’t suck. Check out the trailer.
Rockit
Back to the Future stunt footage mixed with Herbie Hancock. Whrrrrrit whit wirrrrrr. Wrrrrit rrrit rrrrit whirrrrrr. – Thanks to Adlan Farazi for the tip.
Mega Dega Puehse
Haven’t heard from the Puehse Twins lately, wonder what they’re up to? Making movies that I’m going to have to hide from my kids because if they ever see this, I’m going to have to watch it 100 times. The DVD release of Nic an Tristan Go Mega Dega! is June 8, 2010. – Thanks to Simon Mrozinski for the tip.
He does all his own stunts
I’m captivated by this still frame from a Jackie Chan movie. It’s hard to tell, but he’s on a skateboard. It will be more clear when you see the other 29 frames per second. I’m not sure what movie this is from, but it looks like the 90’s as Jackie still kind of younger looking. It looks like it’s going to be pretty straight forward action until mid way through where it suddenly goes over the top. Look for gratuitous flip tricks during a high speed chase. Chan does his own stunts, he probably learned to skate for this movie. Some shots are definitely a stunt double though. – Thanks to Hung for the tip.
Machotaildrop trailer
I know nothing about Machotaildrop. At first I thought I was watching a parody of an indy film mashup by Michel Gondry, Wes Anderson and Spike Jonze. If your going to be influenced by someone, that’s a good crowd to choose from, although it could all go horribly wrong. Then it started looking expensive, so I thought it might be real. The project exists on IMDB, so I’m inclined to believe it is real. There’s an official web site, Machotaildrop.com, but it appears to be broken or at best, poorly thought out. Check out the trailer. This could be the first movie with skateboarding as a major plot device that isn’t unintentionally funny. Check the trailer after the jump. Keep your eyes peeled for pro skaters and unless I’m mistaken, an homage to a famous scene in Thrashin’. UPDATE: Just found and added a sneak peak of the film. UPDATE 2: Added link to another interview with the writer/director team and a behind the scenes video. – Thanks to JF for the tip.
Friday T&A on S&A: Hot and Saucy Pizza Girls
The adult film Hot and Saucy Pizza Girls from 1979 appears to have at least four skateboarding scenes. I haven’t been able to find a copy online for less than $17, and I’m not prepared to shell out that much to find out. Some VHS copies are going for $30! Desiree Cousteau is billed as the female lead, and she coincidentally starred in Female Athletes too. Pizza Girls gets good “reviews” for attempted plot and comedy, although I suspect there was one good review and everyone just paraphrases it. Tune in after the jump for a PG-13 trailer that is still NSFW if you have the audio track loud at the end. There’s also a link to an entirely NSFW trailer. Both trailers have hot and spicy skateboard action. – Thanks to BrockEs for the tip.
Friday T&A on S&A: Female Athletes
As seen on the Berrics. This is a poster for an adult film from 1979 titled Female Athletes. The folks at the Berrics have not “seen the ‘film’ and have no plans to,” but they did appropriate the image for a t-shirt. Come on. If you are going to rip off the poster, at least watch the movie, or don’t pretend to be so demure about the whole thing, Here at S&A, we’ve got no such hangups. I found the whole thing online and skimmed it for skateboarding scenes, but saw none. I had to skim it, the damn thing is 80 minutes long, and that’s way to long for an adult film. Although you have to admire how they at least try to be like a real film, with a story line, acting and all. Nice original soundtrack too. – Thanks to Mike Estes for the tip.
Hard Ticket to Hawaii
Wow. I can’t believe this one flew under my radar for so long, but it was released a mere year after Thrashin’. I’m not sure what this movie is about, but it’s got two Playboy Playmates and a skateboarding goon (Hey! that’s Russ Howell?1) who meets a spectacular untimely demise. Is it because he’s doing handstands down the middle of a highway, or because he’s spinning 360’s with an inflatable doll? Both valid reasons, to be sure, but not there are other extenuating circumstances. Playmates are well known for their acting chops, so you know this clip is… not going to feature them. – Thanks to Skate D for the tip.
Faces of American Health Care: Lee Bender
Well, I opened a can of worms with religion, so I might as well tackle present another hot topic, health care reform in the United States. Part two of a series from Austin Considine called Faces of American Health Care features a sobering look at former pro skater Lee Bender. Number two in a multi-part series: From the heartland, a look at a few of the real people adversely affected by our health care system today. Part two looks at Lee Bender, a former pro skater who was recently diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Despite comparatively good coverage he faces over $36,000 in debt for treatment over the last 18 months. According to the World Health Organization, health care in the United States ranks 37th in the world, based on quality and access, among other things. Skateboarders take a risk every time they skate. Insurance or lack of, is in the back of many of the minds of skaters who are living on their own. I’m not sure how to do it, but our health care system definitely needs reform. Health insurance is a racket and costs are out of control. – Thanks to Max Macias via Facebook for the tip.
