It’s the socks
There’s some great skating mixed in the lifestyle/fashion shots of this promo video from a… sock company? Er.. yeah. It’a called Stance Socks. Does anyone remember that crappy magazine that Transworld published called… Transworld Stance? Does this trick have a name? Otherwise it’s what, a no-comply to tail on in a bowl?
Underexposed: A Women’s Skateboarding Documentary
Underexposed is a film by Amelia Brodka focusing on the plight of women in the professional skateboarding arena. At a time when women’s skateboarding seems bigger than ever, there seem to be fewer opportunities for girls to pursue the sport. How can this be changed? Underexposed explores the past, present and future of women’s skateboarding. It focuses on the current uprise of female skaters by featuring footage of girls ripping all over the world. The film couples skate footage with interviews from the top marketing and media professionals of the skateboarding industry. Interviews include the heads of: Thrasher, TransWorld, Etnies, Toy Machine, SkateOne and Hoopla. By exploring the business side of skateboarding, Underexposed seeks to figure out how to generate more opportunities for women in skateboarding. The first pubic screening of Underexposed is February 14th, 9:00PM at the Fry St Theater (1210 W. Hickory) in Denton, Texas as part of the Thin Line Film Festival
Skateboarding on CNN
CNN has a photo spread by Mike Belleme on what they call an “inside look at street skating.” There some cool shots in there mixed among a lot of photojournalism-style shots that would be called “lifestyle” in a different context. – Thanks to Jeffrey Roenning for the tip.
Cheeburger Cheeburger Cheeburger
No Coke. Pepsi This Pepsi can hails from Greece, circa 1993. Limited edition, don’t you know? Mohawks, dogs and guitars on skateboards. Radical. I can’t believe Greece still used pull tabs on cans as late as 1993. If you don’t get the reference, look it up. Good luck finding a video. Effing Hulu…
Rodney Mullen at the Smithsonian
Rodney Mullen visited the Smithsonian (on invitation) as part of the Lemelson Center’s informal initiative to build relationships with skateboarding’s innovators. Your response may be “What the what?” Or at least, what is the Lemelson Center and why do they care about skateboarding? Technically, it’s the Jerome and Dorothy Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation, and it was established in 1995 under the larger umbrella of the Smithsonian Institution. But why skateboarding? According to deputy director Jeff Brodie: Most associate invention and innovation with technology and science, but the Center often explores other unexpected places where invention and innovation flourishes—like skateboarding. This wide exploration is critical to fostering an appreciation for the central role invention and innovation play in the history of the United States. It also makes our work extremely interesting, fun, and exciting as we meet, collaborate, and explore the world of invention and innovation with all types of people. And it doesn’t end with Rodney Mullen’s interview. They are planning an event to coincide with National Go Skateboarding Day called Innoskate, which will be “a major public festival that will celebrate invention and creativity in skate culture.” Watch Rodney’s interview and read a little…
Hyundai Epic Play Date
Only one commercial shown during the Superbowl this year featured skateboarding… and the Flaming Lips too. That’s probably a good chunk of change for them. Watch the 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe “Epic Playdate”commercial after the break. NoPrize to anyone who can name that skatepark.

Hard Wear in Vogue
Vogue Magazine has a spread on “model turned photographer” Hanneli Mustaparta’s “Skater Style” which isn’t really coming across in these photos, or maybe I don’t know what skater style is. These are Hanneli’s photos and/or photos of Hannah. Although her style doesn’t typically skew toward the disheveled, urban uniform of most New York City skateboarders, Hanneli Mustaparta puts her obsession with the pastime down to growing up in Norway where the sport was once illegal. “That made it mysterious and cool,” she recalls. It would be more than a little farfetched to call her polished threads rebellious, but the type of clean, modern apparel that she’s documented wearing on street-style blogs certainly make for a more unexpected approach to dressing for sidewalk surfing. “I got my first longboard back in 2008,” says Mustaparta, who uses it to glide from A to B. The article has a list of other model types or fashionistas who use a skateboard for transportation. Has your princess stopped dressing like one?
The Star-News in Wilmington, North Carolina asks “Has your princess stopped dressing like one?” in hopes of getting you to place a classified ad for a yard sale so you can get rid of all her “pretty, fashionable clothes to make room for baggy jeans and t-shirts.” Princess doesn’t have to be worried about being embarrassed though, she’s at least a decade more mature now. Although this ad ran recently in December of 2012, the magic of Google News turned up the same advert back in 2007 and again as early as 2005! I’m not sure what I’m more surprised by, a newspaper running an 8 year old ad campaign (Newspapers dying? But they’re so current!) or the fact that Google has an archive of random newspapers. To be fair, the ad campaign is a good one, and the newspaper archive appeals to the packrat historian in me. I just wish they had better scans, and a little information about the newspaper. I’ve archived one of the ads after the jump, because you know Skate and Annoy is going to outlast this fad called Google.
