Hard Wear in Vogue
Vogue Magazine has a spread on “model turned photographer” Hanneli Mustaparta’s “Skater Style” which isn’t really coming across in these photos, or maybe I don’t know what skater style is. These are Hanneli’s photos and/or photos of Hannah. Although her style doesn’t typically skew toward the disheveled, urban uniform of most New York City skateboarders, Hanneli Mustaparta puts her obsession with the pastime down to growing up in Norway where the sport was once illegal. “That made it mysterious and cool,” she recalls. It would be more than a little farfetched to call her polished threads rebellious, but the type of clean, modern apparel that she’s documented wearing on street-style blogs certainly make for a more unexpected approach to dressing for sidewalk surfing. “I got my first longboard back in 2008,” says Mustaparta, who uses it to glide from A to B. The article has a list of other model types or fashionistas who use a skateboard for transportation. Has your princess stopped dressing like one?
The Star-News in Wilmington, North Carolina asks “Has your princess stopped dressing like one?” in hopes of getting you to place a classified ad for a yard sale so you can get rid of all her “pretty, fashionable clothes to make room for baggy jeans and t-shirts.” Princess doesn’t have to be worried about being embarrassed though, she’s at least a decade more mature now. Although this ad ran recently in December of 2012, the magic of Google News turned up the same advert back in 2007 and again as early as 2005! I’m not sure what I’m more surprised by, a newspaper running an 8 year old ad campaign (Newspapers dying? But they’re so current!) or the fact that Google has an archive of random newspapers. To be fair, the ad campaign is a good one, and the newspaper archive appeals to the packrat historian in me. I just wish they had better scans, and a little information about the newspaper. I’ve archived one of the ads after the jump, because you know Skate and Annoy is going to outlast this fad called Google. Pretty Powerful
It’s Fashion day here on S&A, for no particular reason other than I have some fashion items piling up and I’m reminded of the 80’s skateboard/fashion zine out of Michigan, Stuf Magazine. From Bobbi Brown, world-famous makeup artist, Pretty Powerful is a new kind of makeup manual that starts with who you are, rather than how you look. In this book, Bobbi interviews dozens of real women, celebrities, and athletes about what beauty means to them and shows, step-by-step, how to achieve each look. Along the way, she shares her trade secrets for striking eyes, youthful skin, pretty lips, and perfect brows for any age, skin color, or beauty type. Brimming with hundreds of stunning makeover ideas, recommendations for the best tools and products, inspiring beauty stories, and expert tips not found anywhere else, Pretty Powerful is the must-have guide for lasting beauty, inside and out. Style Rumor Mag has a video of 10 girls noodling around on fancy “Pretty Powerful” skateboards. It’s pretty weak. – Thanks to Seth Levy for the tip.
Wrecked
I’m just getting over the sequel to my recent bout with strep throat, which came back with a vengeance a few days after my meds ran out. I’m on different meds now, but still feel a little wrecked. Posts will be light for a few days. Speaking of wrecked, some genius drove a van into Robb Field skatepark in San Diego last week. At least the last Burnside drive through was on purpose.
Dynamite Volume 2 Number 9
Dynamite Magazine Volume 2, Number 9 has some a slight skateboard running through it. The cover story is on Kristy McNichols’s and Leif Garrett’s onscreen breakup in the TV show “Family.” It mentions Leif’s appearance in Skateboard: the Movie. There’s a groovy 3D pull out poster inside and a small cartoon with a skateboard in the “Bummers” section. Dynamite Magazine #58 was published in 1979.
Highly unlikley
It’s highly unlikely that this Swell brand gum is either, soft, fruity, or “swell,” given that it dates back to early 80’s. Unbelievably, the starting bid on a box of antique gum is $125. You can get an unopened box of skateboarding trading cards from roughly the same era for about quarter of that. I can’t tell exactly what is going on here, this kid is possibly puking fruit into big glass of soda. Big box after the jump.
News Flash:
Skateboarding no longer Extreme!™
I just saw this Red Bull commercial on TV sunday night, and couldn’t help but noticed they covered everything except the glring omission of skateboarding. I mean, they had down hill ice skating races for the love of Hosoi. I don’t know whether to laugh with joy or weep. Oh yeah, on second look, there doesn’t appear to be any snowboarding either. But again, they’ve got “Ice Cross” and parkour.
FridayT&A on S&A: Neal Hendrix as Sports Babe of the Day
Neal Hendrix is Babes dig Balls Sports Babe of the Day. Babes Dig Balls is “The sports spot by babes who dig balls…and pucks.” If the interwebs has taught me anything, it’s that this site probably run by a 30-something dude. What is sexier than a babe on a skateboard with five X Games medals and a trip to the Olympic Games? Not much. Today’s SBOTD is sexy Lewisville, North Caroline native, Neal Hendrix. Click the link for his interview.
McDonalds stickers from 2000
McDonalds stickers from 2000. I see everyone has on the prerequisite bicycle helmets. You know, before I met Colin Sharp, I had never eaten in an American McDonalds for my entire life. I did eat at one in Warsaw, circa 1993.
Let’s make A Deal!
Daymond Dodge snapped these pics off his TV. He happened to catch Let’s Make A Deal with host Wayne Brady. A Zonk prize? Now way! Who wouldn’t want a skateboarding gorilla? Even if you couldn’t keep the guy in the monkey suit, that’s the sweet spot for novelty oversized skateboards. This type of video is worth it’s weight in gold to a historian/connoisseur such as myself, so if anyone caught it on tape, please share the wealth. CBS has full episodes on the web, but Daymond caught this on the 28th of December, and they don’t have any from that date. I think it’s a repeat.
