Current edge
Current TV is a “Network” made up of short video segments produced by their own resources as well as those in their community of viewers. I put network in quotes because I’ve never seen the channel or any of it’s shows. It sounds like something you’d read about in Wired magazine. A kind of a hybrid and hopefully higher quality YouTube with quality assurance department. You can even get paid if your content gets aired on TV. What does this grand experiment mean to you? Toyota is sponsoring a channel of “pods” (I wonder what “pods” refers to?) called Current Edge. Right now there are some good skateboarding segments up there, most notably the Texas Sized Ramps which covers the Death Star and Banana Farm, which you may have seen in the likes of Thrasher or some other mainstream rag. The Renegade Concrete pod on Marginal Way in Seattle is just OK, and the one on the Dublin Skate Scene seems a little generic, at least the first 20 seconds do because it craps out abruptly. Goodyear goes old school.
Street boneless in a TV commercial? Yes, but it’s European, so maybe that explains it. Check out this fun commercial for Goodyear Eagle tires. You can almost taste the spring air in the first few moments. – Thanks to Eric Cherry for the tip. [Source: Flabber]
Life imitates Skate and Annoy
Mark Conahan made a comic with featuring the skateboarders on the Tootsie Roll Pop wrapper. Today I saw on the Krux web site that they have some shirts called “sucker” featuring the appropriated art. Nice job Krux, but a bummer for me because I was working on something similar for a different project. I guess that is why Krux (AKA N.H.S.) is a real company, and my operation runs out of a basement. Oh well, you snooze, you lose. If by some chance you’ve never noticed the skateboarders on the Tootsie Pop Roll wrappers, keep reading.
Old vert skaters weigh in on Punk Rock: Pierre Luc Gagnon and Tony Hawk should STFU.
Actually those guys aren’t actually trying to spread any musical gospel, I’ve just been dying for an excuse to use the STFU acronym in a post title. Pierre Luc Gagnon Says “Skate Culture Isn’t Just About Punk Rock Anymore” in an article in Chart Attack (Your Canadian Music Source, eh?) and Tony Hawk is narrating a feature documentary on the 90’s punk scene.
School Discriminates against (human) skaters
You can’t skate in the Aurora Illinois grade school unless you are a Guinea pig, and I don’t mean the figurative kind. Hall Elementary School has a class pet that is a Guinea pig, and for some reason the teachers allow an d encourage children to drag the Guinea pig through the halls on a skateboard. Yes, they used the “teacher’s pet” joke. Yes, Aurora is a neighboring suburb to Naperville. Yes, this is a weak post. Yes, you can read more at theBeacon News.
Hot Wheels Skate Freaks
Hot Wheels Skate Freaks is a collection of skateboard toys that looks like it was designed in the 80’s. The figures appear to based on some Sizzler type technology they resurrected in some time around 2000 for skateboard toys. Watch this commercial with an Extreme™ voiceover and more Skate Freaks action after the jump.
Skater Hater Suspended
From WLTX News in South Carolina: Officer Who Shoved Skateboarder Gets Suspension CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP, WLTX) — The Charleston police officer seen on Internet video pushing a skateboarder over a bush at a city park has been suspended for ten days. Police Chief Greg Mullen says 49-year-old officer Willie Simmons used an unnecessary level of force. The 19-year-old skateboarder declined to file assault charges against Simmons. The officer was taped pushing a skateboarder off his board at the Waterpark in downtown. The officer defended herself by saying that that skateboarding is illegal in Charleston. As a result, the 19-year-old injured his lower back and ankle. Fascinating. Now watch it again.

The Inevitable Rocco Documetary
It’s about time. Steve Rocco is probably the guy who single handedly did the most to change the face of the skateboarding industry. Love him or hate him, you can’t deny his impact. Whyte House productions is making a documentary on Steve Rocco titled The Man Who Souled the World. It looks like they are already in bed with World Industries, so they could have the best chance of actually getting the dirt from and on Steve. [Source: The Hot Crew]

It’s over folks. we have skateboarding in PE classes and now high school skateboarding teams that travel and compete against each other. Read all about in a Thousand Oaks Acorn article titled High school skateboarding teams gearing up for inaugural season or this identical article with different title (High schools set to battle for skateboarding supremacy) and pictures. Local skateboarders finally have a league to call their own. Rosie O’Donnell should be proud.
