Vintage Rip City with Black Flag
Rip City Skates (Santa Monica, California) commercial introducing the new Raymond Pettibon skateboard designs for 1984. The decks featured classic Pettibon illustrations and Black Flag iconography. So “commercial” implies that it was on television at some point, my guess is cable access at best, but still rad. I would have lost control if I had seen this on air back in the day. Lost my mind.

SOTW 5-28-12: Brooklyn Street Plural
It’s too bad these aren’t old timer stereogram pics. Of course then you’d need a viewer, and the subject matter would look more like this. This week’s shot(s) of the week were poached from Daniel Evans Instagram feed on two separate occasions (one and two). I wish you could enlarge a photo on the Instagram feed on your phone for crying out loud. Getting back to the subject matter, expansion is in the works at Brooklyn Street Skate Spot, this time fully permitted before the fact. In the background of the first shot you can see a tangentially related neighborhood beautification project in the form of a street painting. Although not part of BSSS, it was the vibrant community of BSSS that drew the non-skating artists to the spot.
Friday T&A on S&A: Longboardgirls
There is a Facebook page called A Longboard Makes a Girl Twice As Hot. It’s disgusting, really. I mean why discriminate against regular sized boards? – Thanks to Matthijs for the tip.
Digging in Spain
The Turf isn’t the only skatepark waiting around to be unearthed. Spain’s first skatepark in… In where? They don’t say! Anyway, they’ve been dogging by hand for over a year and have the freestyle platter and one of the bowls unearthed. The video (Digging) is a about 18 minutes long, and you have to wait about 14 to see some present day skating. I would have liked to see more of the surrounding terrain. It’s like they are keeping it a secret. Confusion says it’s near Barcelona in Arenys de munt. So does S.U.S.C. Digging and bonus vid after the jump. I wonder what’s up with saving the Turf? [Source: Bowl to Be a Trail ] – Thanks to Michael Pfister for the tip.
Implementation of reinforcement
OTRO is a skatepark thinly disguised as art, but hey, I’m not complaining. Whatever you have to call it to get it paid for and built is OK by me. Koo Jeong-A is the artist, the location is… I can’t figure it out, possibly in Brussels. The plans say something about tunnels, but I don’t see them. The construction photos might be the real art. Check it out at L’escaut. Post title comes from the translated caption of one of the rebar photos. – Thanks to Jerome for the tip.
The legend of Roger Fairdale
Roger Fairdale was a famous English cyclist who set several long distance speed records and was even knighted for his acts of bravery. He drowned in the early 1920’s while trying to swim across the English Channel with his bike attached via chain to a padded canvas belted harness. He was memorialized by… Whats that? Oh yeah, right. No. This is a collaboration between Fairdale Bikes (makers of the skaterack) and Roger Skateboards. Check out the video after the jump. If I’m not mistaken, that’s Tim Kerr from the Big Boys making an appearance.
Clown Ramp rebirth
There’s a guy trying to restore the Clown Ramp, I’ve got an email or a Facebook message somewhere that I’ve misplaced. I know he’s looking for people who might know where pieces of it are, mainly the bits that used to be part of Skate Ball. The pic above is from Embassy Skateboards recap of their 2nd Annual Jeff Phillips tribute.
Independent, and wooden
“Original wooden form for the Prototype Independent baseplate, circa 1977.” I wonder how they got the raised text on the baseplate looking so clean. [Source: independenttrucks on Instagram]
