Powell Street benefit
Powell Street skatepark benefit in Portland. Neighborly forces are mobilizing. Plan B is the venue, Skate rock and skate vids are the plan. Shrunken Heads is the sponsor. Portland’s skatepark system has definitely stalled, gone into hibernation even, but it seems that we’re gearing up for the second great push.
Sources in the History of the Modern Middle East
Actual college level textbook. Photo credited to Jim Shannon and caption reads “The image shows a member of the ‘Aggressive Crew’ performing a skateboard jump near the Allahverdi Khan Bridge in Esfahan, Iran.” – Thanks to Adam Wallingford for the photos.
Dew Stour street action
Omar Salazar talks about his input into the Dew Tour street contest to held on an actual downhill street. Omar’s take is interesting, but then there’s some news from the Dew Tour press release. The Dew Tour, in conjunction with the athletes and industry veterans, created the Streetstyle discipline as a way to recognize the thriving action sports community in San Francisco. Huh? I could have sworn Thrasher Magazine “created” the first streetstyle event. The contest in San Francisco happened over the weekend. I was confused by press releases with two different winners of street events, but it looks like they had a “skate street” contest and a separate “streetstyle” event. It’s pointless to rail against the corporations involved in modern professional skateboard spectacles. Skateboarders more or less run these events anyway. It’s nice to see a little creativity in the format, even if it is rehashed creativity from 30 years ago. Wow. I can’t believe how long I’ve been obsessed with skateboarding…

Bunk punk
Check out this video from Socery Sammy, who I think is part of the Sorcery 118 crew. Good skating and nice juxtaposition with ancillary “punk” footage. I don’t know how much is appropriated or what the original source of the extra footage is, but it’ll give it an A for postmodernism. How I used to hate listening to my professors go on and on about postmodernism, but I get it. This is Grover’s tip. Thanks to Grover for the tip. Grover is on the Sorcery 118 tip.
Gene Pool fundraiser
No need to wonder anymore. Fundraiser for the Gene Pool. Saturday October 20th. Flyer after the jump.
Friday T&A on S&A: Disney Orgy
By the time this post goes live, the limited edition Disney Paul Krassner & Wally Wood will undoubtedly be sold out or otherwise no longer available from Boom Art, $340 or not. The content aside, the overall package is really well done. This is the way to, uhm… do it. The Disneyland Memorial Orgy illustration is not a tip to 90’s era skate graphics copyright steamrolling, but was originally drawn in 1967 and published in what the hippies called an underground comic. OOPS! Thought I had scheduled this for Friday!
Mike Ternasky Reflection: Plan B Legacy
Plan B is launching a video history of Plan B. This first segment is titled Mike Ternasky Reflection, Return of ‘The Team.’ In 1991 Mike Ternasky assembled one of the most dominant teams in the history of the sport and produced what many consider to be the best skate video of all time, Questionable. In 1994, after Mike’s tragic death in car accident the future of the team appeared to be over. Then in 2005, founding team members Danny Way and Colin McKay relaunched the brand with their own version of the super team and a dream to continue the legacy of Plan B. I didn’t have time to watch it all, but you do or you wouldn’t be here. [Source: Ali Sports]
Sedro-Woolley Bully
There’s a new skatepark opening about an hour and some change north of Seattle in a town called Sedro-Woolley. The grand opening is Saturday October 13, 2012. Hey wait, that was two days ago! There’s a facebook page a grainy webcam. Who built this? There’s a Grindline shirt in one of the photos. Lots of construction shots in extended interval time lapse formatfrom Bob Rock. – Thanks to John Aguilar for the (late) tip.
Reissue day
These Powell Peralta reissues are just the tip of the iceberg of what Stacy is pushing in connection with the Bones Brigade documentary. A few items are already sold out. I have… mixed feelings about this. I don’t begrudge these guys the right to make a living, but it seems a little excessive and counterintuitive to the legacy. I don’t know if they need the money or not. Maybe they realize their shelf life is limited at this (amazingly) late stage in their careers, so they’re just trying to get one last payoff. Check out the goods.
