Mitsubishi and the Faction
This commercial for the 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander GTV features two interesting things; A mother nagging her son to wear his helmet and a soundtrack by The Faction! I would have been more amazed by this had it not been for the fact that bands like the Clash, Ramones, Sex Pistols, and the Buzzcocks have already appeared (via soundtrack) in commercials. Actual skate rock for a skateboarding scene in a commercial? I guess that is unexpected. [Source: Ispot.tv – via Doc SkateRock]
ALF’s Super Hit Parade
Alf’s Super Hit Parade from 1990. The series ended in 1990, but someone in Germany still thought this was a good idea. Alf is rocking a state of the art boom box and a state of 1984 skateboard. Those pads have cats on them too, which would be like a non-vegetarian person skating with cows or chickens on their kneepads. Alf may not be as prolific as Bart Simpson, so it’s a good thing I’ve got a tag for Alf, because otherwise you’d have to sift through every post with “half pipe” in it if you were doing a search. – Thanks to BPA for the tip.
The Top 2 Violin Playing Skateboarders
After exhaustive research of the very crowded field of contenders, Skate And Annoy is finally able to give you the definitive top 2 record covers featuring violinists playing while riding a skateboard. In the interest of fairness, I’m going to list them in chronological order. Drumroll please… First there was the country, rock, Cajun and calypso sounds of Steamin´ Freeman, a guy who once hailed from Bellingham, Washington. Who knows, maybe he can be found lurking at the Bellingham skatepark. Then in 1979, Rounder Records released Mark O’Connor’s “On the Rampage,” which he recorded at the ripe young age of 17! So it likely wasn’t the record company’s idea that he pose on a skateboard. According to this review, he was an excellent bluegrass player. UPDATE: Added videos of Mark O’Connor concert performed on skateboards.
Smurfarna!
S&A reader Johan snapped a few pics of a CD he found at a flea market. Smurf Hits are compilations of smurfed versions of pop tunes. The Smurfarna versions are sung in Swedish, some by this lady. Surfarna 5 came out in 1998, and features some excellent skateboarding (Smurfboarding?) action on the covers. Back in 1997 they used a skateboard in the art for an English speaking compilation as well. It will make your ears bleed.
Pure Fun #11
I completely spaced on posting the release party for Pure Fun #11 that featured none other than the Johnny Rad. So you’ve all missed the release party but you can still grab a copy of Pure Fun. The latest issue is 36 professionally printed and saddle stitched pages of photos, interviews, reviews and articles, including Awake Zine, Tod Swank, Johnny Rad, and Mike Vallely. 3 lucky people out of the first 100 orders will receive a free bonus copy of Bonus Brigade from Powell Peralta. I don’t even know what Bonus Brigade is… (Now I do. It’s a 175 minutes of footage and extras not used in the Bones Brigade documentary. Interesting…) Get yours here. P.S. Publishing your own zine? Don’t forget to get yours listed on SkateZines.com.
Punks and Posers
MTV’s Punks and Posers from a time (1985) when they actually played music videos, blah blah blah. I think this aired at 11:00 at night originally, I taped it to VHS when I should have been finishing my computer science homework. I watched the hell out of this. It’s Got the Dickies and GBH (yawn) but also a rare appearance by the band Plain Wrap, which I had completely forgotten about. I bought their album when I saw it at Record Swap, based on seeing this video. That vinyl still resides in my basement, need to dig it up. If you are at all familiar with 80’s LA Punk there should be a few other faces you recognize as well. Interviews talking about “punk”… so lame, yet so entertaining. There is some incidental skateboarding in the video as well, so it’s actually topical to this web site, and yes.. It’s a stretch. I was stoked to see this again after so many years.
Love will get you like a case of…
And that is something I don’t want to catch. Anthrax skateboard shaped patch, circa late 80’s, possibly early 90’s. What’s up with that deck shape? Nostalgia costs $15. Bring the noise.
The Briefs backs…
I mean THE BRIEFS ARE BACK!!!!! Get it, their backs, and they’re back. I just want to make sure you get the full comedic brilliance here, let it soak in. The Briefs have recently reformed and are touring. They’ll be in Portland at East End on Saturday. It’s a small venue, so if it isn’t sold out I’ll be surprised. It’s the Briefs man! These photos are from a 2006 show in Portland. I love the Briefs. I’ve been waiting for this show since… 2006 I guess. I think the last time I saw them was in Chicago at the not-so-secret show with Naked Raygun the night before Riot Fest 2006. I’m going to bring a new pair of shoes to throw onstage again.
Devil Inside
Ah yes… INXS 6th album Kick, with the infamous Psycho Stick on the cover and minimal skateboarding featured in the video for Devil Inside. You’ve seen it, we’ve all seen it., but what about this little pin with the skateboarding devil on it? Looks like it came form Pee Wee’s Playhouse. Not exactly rare or unknown, but it’s never made an appearance here on S&A, and you know I like to be thorough.
Scott Asheton R.I.P.
The Stooges drummer Scott Asheton passed away on Saturday night, as reported by Iggy Pop. That’s Asheton on the right in a promo photo for the reunited Iggy and the Stooges circa 2010. More details on Asheton’s history with Iggy at Rolling Stone.
