Agent Orange past and present
Agent Orange is playing Sunday 28th at Slabtown Bar in Portland, along with Grindline, the Band. Meanwhile, John Egertson was converting some old vinyl to mp3’s and pulled out this mail order sheet from Agen’t Orange’s This Is the Voice, their ill-fated 1986 semi-major label debut on Enigma records. I think these guys even had an appearance in a movie around this time. Flyer for Staurday’s show and a chance to go back in time to order guitar picks, t-shirts and skateboards after the jump. – Thanks and happy birthday to Steve Turner for the tip.
Not exactly skate rock
I hate this band. I hate the music actually, but I saw a Behind the Music episode on them that made me change my opinion of them. They seem like decent enough fellows that had a dream, went for it, and actually made it. The music, not so great. Another image from the Vintage T-Shirts book by Lisa Kidner and Sam Knee. Basement NOFX show, circa 94
From Crust Productions: Rob Morrow of Morrow Snowboards, located in Salem Oregon managed to get NOFX to stop and play in his basement. NOFX was on their way to do a gig at the now defunct La Luna in PDX when a lucky few got there own personal show in the basement of the Ranch. About 100 were jam packed into the basement. Bad vocals, no lightning and zero room but the show went on! This video has been in storage for over 15 years and thanx to Mr Hauswirth and Mr Price, the footage was transferred from the old VHS to MiniDV. So there you have it. Video after the jump.
Bootz and Glitz
Bootz and Glitz has a roundup of some skateboard exploitation songs from the 70’s. Some of the tracks appear on This is Skateboard Music, and a bunch of them have been featured here already, but there are a couple new ones. These guys up top are the Swedish band called the Boppers. They may look like a late 50’s early 60’s act, but they were in fact a 70’s revival act. I’m still not sure that the first track from the Downhill Racers belongs in that post. Check out Bootz and Glitz. – Thanks to Eric Shea for the tip.
Crisis of Conformity
Speaking of Dave Grohl, here’s a video featuring Mr Grohl from last weekend’s appearance on Saturday Night Live. The bit is the father of the bride getting his old 80’s band back together to play one song at his daughter’s wedding reception. Turns out his old band was hardcore. The premise is not too far off from McGill’s latest commercial and MC’s comic. Fairly decent 80’s era hardcore imitation. Good band name too. Somewhere out there somebody in awe that SNL used thier band name in a skit. There’s got to have been a real “Crisis of Conformity” at some point. SNL on SNA. Check it out after the jump.
Flogging Molly with Patrick Melcher
Here’s an old Flogging Molly video for “Drunken Lullabies” featuring Patrick Melcher. Side One Dummy is about to release a double live CD and DVD titled Live at the Greek Theater. Preorder now and you can get a free t-shirt. What’s that? You want more Flogging Molly and skateboarding? How about Tony Hawk interviewing Matt Hensley? – Thanks to Heath Berg for the tip.
Muslim punks, Papal skateboarders
Taqwacore is both a fictional book described as “Catcher in the Rye” for young Muslims and a documentary film on the birth of Punk Islam. The trailer, press and web site weren’t as interesting as I had hoped. It’s all a little too slick and calculated, almost as if it’s being done because it’s such an obvious dichotomy, the purporters knew it would generate interest. I’m still interested in seeing the film, although I distrust anything to do with organized religion and gung-ho adoption of popular culture. And speaking of… I’ve also got some year old video of skateboarding inside the Catholic school system. The real story isn’t the skateboard that was designed and given to the Pope, instead it’s Father Peter Pomposello dragging his knuckle on the gym floor at St. Elizabeth’s in Washington Heights, NYC. – Thanks to Tito and Sarib Khalsa for the tips.
We Care a Lot!
I’ll take the Chuck Mosley incarnation of Faith No More over Mike Patton any day. According to Wikipedia, the original lead singer was actually Courtney Love! Who knew? I saw Mosley fronting Faith No More at the Metro in Chicago. At the time there were rumors floating around that he had narcolepsy or something, and maybe that was why he was sacked from the band. Although there were also rumors of “substance abuse,” and I suppose a good heroin fix nodding off might have the appearance of narcolepsy to someone very naive. In any case, Chuck did not fall asleep at that show, and Mike Patton is for the birds. Introduce Yourself was a Slash records release, what a cool label that was. Every punk in my high school had a copy of that Slash Records: The Early Sessions compilation on cassette tape. I’m pretty sure I’ve told this story already. I’m turning into one of those doddering old fools/punk. Let me bore you with tales from my youth. I was the best poser out there. I guess they were back in business for a while., but I can’t find them anywhere now. The video for We Care a Lot…
Skateboard as band gig flyer
Best idea ever. Some gently used decks were repurposed into flyers for the band Hot Lunch. Eric Shea explained how it all went down. My pal Bart unloaded a grip of decks that he didn’t want any more for me give to the neighborhood kids at Potrero Del Sol skatepark here in SF – the ones who needed boards. And I did give away like four of them but out of the four only one kid said “thanks” (and that was because his sister made him say it). The other kids just yelled at me and demanded that I give them more free things. So I thought maybe it would be better to do something different with the remaining decks. I cut a stencil for my band’s next show and spray painted our name and the gig info on the griptape. Then I went around the Mission at night with a drill and some wood screws, putting them up around various wooden telephone poles ( 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9) After each deck was up for a day and a night, I’d post a pic on various forums telling people to go find ’em and take…
Ankle injuries and finger breaks
Two music videos featuring skateboarding of a sort. The first one is for a Fujiya & Miyagi song called Ankle Injuries. It’s stop action animation made with colored dice imitating pixels, pretty much the same technique Michel Gondry used in the White Stripes video for Fell In Love With A Girl, only with Legos. Still, it’s fun to watch, retro skateboard and Adidas shoes and all. It’s brief though, blink and you might miss it. – Thanks to MC for the tip. He’s hip to the kids and thier music, you know? The second video is for an Atmosphere song called You. It’s a fingerboard session at a party. Not that exciting, but it rounds out the post. Thanks to reader Ticorico for the tip.
