The Jeff Phillips and Per Welinder Freestyle Club
I added four adverts to the collection of issue number 3 of Transworld Skateboarding from 1983. City Street Wheels from San Francisco and and Donel, a skateshop from Dallas, are both pretty pedestrian except for the fact that Donel is very excited about a new foot game called Hacky Sack! Freestyle is where the action is today. Per Welinder appears in an ad for Baja South clothing, but if there ever was a skate trivia game winner, it’s got to be the Gullwing trucks ad featuring Jeff Phillips riding a G&S freestyle model, boosting what would appear to be a rocket air if you follow the strictest of definitions. How would you get into one of those on a bank??? Well…. he was Jeff Phillips.
The chick is not included
Only in the 70’s (and 50’s, 60’s 80’s and 90’s) could you get away with a line like “Unfortunately, the chick is not included” coupled with a headline like “Your pad or mine?” The black and white photo is from product release news in the 1st issue (1977) of Skateboard Scene. It’s about a new line of safety gear from Syndicate (no relation to the US company) that was an offshoot of the Skuda brand. With a ? of a page product announcement, it’s no surprise that there were also ads for Skuda and Syndicate pads. The dapper fellow on the right is from the Skuda advert. Surprisingly, a 2008 post about a plastic Skuda was one of the first Skuda mentions on the interwebs, and was pretty popular here. It still gets the occasional odd comment. Can you tell I’ve updated the Vintage Skatemag Ad Gallery? I also added a cool, slightly goofy ad from a company called Roncastle, and Wharfdales Skateboard Centre. I never get tired of the centre spelled with “re” at the end. I only wish there was an ad for Ye Olde Skateboard Shoppe. (follow the individual links) After you read/see the product announcement for…
Skateboard Scene Ads: Welsh Edition
Two skateboard shops from Wales, Dave Friar’s Surf Shop and the Welsh Skateboard Centre. Then there’s Mercury Flyer air freighted skateboards direct from the USA, and the Superb Sitco Rocket.
Vintage Skateboard Scene Ads-nausem
On this the seventh installment of vintage skateboard magazine ads, the two most interesting additions are for Skateboards Hot Gear, mainly for the illustration, and Fireball Hot Wheels, which possibly predate G&S Rollerballs, although I can’t confirm that yet. The also-rans include Skateboard Rider Skateshop, Furley and Baker Skateboard Range, Southern Skateboard Centre, and Truckstop.
Vintage Skatescene Ads continued
There are seven new additions to the Skatescene #1, 1977 gallery, including Surf Spot Mail Order, Steve Daniel Skateboards, Stateside, Maxwell Designs, Freedom Surf Supplies, and Bristol Skate Centre in color and black & white.
Even more Skateboard Scene ads
Lobo California envy, Cosmic Skateboards, skateboards fit for Gary Glitter, and the infamous Scottish skateboarding pro Gladys McCrackup.
Still More Skateboard Scene Ads
In this round, not one, but two ads for Alley Cat, some very boring text-only ads from Cardiff Skateboard Shop, and Dolphin Skateboards, plastic skateboards from Alpine Sports, and the creepy, faceless skateboarder of the South London Skateboard Centre.
Even More Skateboard Scene Ads
I added six more vintage skateboard advertisements to the Skateboard Scene magazine gallery. This time we’ve got sterling silver necklaces, some mystery boards from Reflex Action, more mystery boards from American Oak Company, Californian skateboards from Scarbourne, plastic GT Coyotes, and Britain’s answer to the American Kryptonic, the Ulon Speedwheel.
More Skateboard Scene Ads
I added four more vintage skateboard advertisements to the Skateboard Scene magazine gallery. Included are some Ace-Flyer Chuck Taylor knock offs, Alta Sports skateboards with a “fantastic set of safety equipment,” the Great British Skateboard from Beadle, and a subscription plug for Skateboard Scene magazine, “the radical read for radical riders.” Enjoy.
Vintage Ads from Skateboard Scene #1
I just added a couple ads to the Vintage Skateboard Mag Ad Gallery. These come from a magazine you’ve likely never heard of titled Skateboard Scene. It’a UK publication, and as such comes with lots of UK-centric companies and products. I love old skateboard ads from the 70’s, and finding this mag made me feel like a kid again. Not necessarily because of the age of the publication, but more because it was filled with all kinds of product I had never seen before. There wasn’t a copyright date anywhere in the magazine, but thanks to VintageSkateboardMagazines.Com I can say it was published in Winter of 1977. This magazine is doubly wacky. It comes with all the usual wackiness of the 70’s and adds the UK skateboarding industry outside perspective. Check out the first two ads in the gallery. Large scan of the cover after the jump.
