Time Lapse Theater: Herman’s Hole
I’m officially starting a new tag. I can watch time lapse videos of skate terrain construction all day long. This one is from Herman’s Hole.
Inverse punchline
Second oldest skate joke in the book after using a real broom to pull a “sweeper.” And that familiar gag is digging a bowl in your back yard and calling it a fish pond to get around zoning and nosy neighbors. In the case of the Bear’s Reef, the homeowner was digging up cat poo in the back yard and unearthed a buried fishpond, inspiring him to renovate it to make it more skateable. Beefed up transition and homemade coping. Sounds like a great project. No idea what part of the country this is in, but I found it while checking in Herman’s Hole, so maybe it’s in the Midwest. Check out Bear’s Reef.
Kickstart a bowl
Well, it’s already been kickstarted, it needs to be finished. This is a backyard bowl in Richmond, Virginia. The builders are looking for money to essentially fill the rest of the yard with concrete. Their motivation, besides the obvious, is the total lack of skateparks in Richmond. People pledge donations that are held in escrow on the condition that the $5,500 goal is met before time runs out. Visit the kickstart page to watch the video and learn more.
In Search of the Miraculous Premiere – TONIGHT!
We’re trying to raise $500 to finish the upper pocket at Brooklyn St. – come donate money, buy some raffle tickets, watch a great flick, drink some beer!
Brooklyn Street in the Portland Mercury
There’s an article about the Brooklyn Street Skate Spot in the Portland Mercury. The picture is old, because phase one is done, right down to the pool coping! Disturbing news though, according to the article, Portland’s light rail is set to impinge on the spot’s footprint as early as 2014. However, I’m not sure if the author did her research, that might just be a reference to the fact that the pedestrian bridge is scheduled to be demolished. The MAX would have to pull eminent domain on all the adjacent buildings and homes too. We’ll see…. There’s also an appearance from the neighborhood sourpuss who again reiterates his displeasure that the whole thing didn’t go through the proper channels. [Photo: David Lansdown]
Born Ugly #8 and C.R.E.T.E.
Born Ugly #8 is out. More of the same quality stuff you’ve come to expect. There’s an nterview with Washington DC skater/photog Shaun Gregoire, an interview Rob Lee from with Richmond Virginia (no it’s not the Dukes of Hazard car…) and a feature on the Kingshighway DIY spot in Saint Louis. My favorite thing in this issue is the graphic (seen above, without the Super 8 MOtel logo) that you can photocopy (or download) for use as a t-shirt design for your own DIY spot fundraiser. The C.R.E.T.E. (Clandestine Revitalization and Enhancement of Transitionless Environments) design comes with excellent instructions, 2A being the best; If you know how to screenprint already then why are you reading this? Just go do it. It just so happens that Sauce zine has already made some, so you can get yours if you want to help as yet unnamed Porltand DIY spots.
DIY parking block
There was a little leftover concrete and rebar from the Notre Dame de L’ile Perrot addition that Kevin Cann was working on. Fortunately, he had previously made a mold for a parking block, and had it ready to go. Kevin is really excited to have some famous Tedder Stone on order for the new bowl, and who knows, maybe Kevin will become famous for his parking blocks!
Capsule Rat says celebrate Burnside’s 20th
Big Halloween bash this year at Burnside. Should be bigger than usual considering it’s the 20 year anniversary. Like Jay Meer says, pray for dry weather. Dashboard is actually showing 59 degrees, partly cloudy and dry. Let’s hope it holds. Anybody help out with the pour yesterday? Flyer after the jump, or check out some photos of the party dress at Skate Daily.
Burnside pouring today
That is, if the lights and yesterdays crew lasted long enough. Grover had his camera in tow again, and he even managed to unearth the long lost relative of the Caddy Shack gopher, Benny the Burnside Rat.
