Friday T&A on S&A: Living Fluff

A long time ago, Barbie had a sister named Skipper, and Skipper had a friend named Fluff. With a name like Fluff, I thought she was an aftermarket, third party friend, but I looked it up. Fluff came packaged as “Living Fluff,” complete with a skateboard. For some reason, every time she shows up for sale on eBay, she’s always accompanied by pictures of herself naked. It’s odd and disturbing. Almost as disturbing as that weird ollie band sled the other Fluff is strapped into. Please, oh please click through, or you will miss “Action skateboard and real posin’ stand included.”

[Disposable] Roots: the first Vision Mark Gonzales graphic by Andy Takakjian

This past November I ran into Marty Jimenez at the preview opening of the Skateboard: Evolution & Art in California exhibition in Santa Monica, CA. Now unfortunately for Marty, he knows that every single time I run into him I’m going to ask if he’s unearthed his board collection yet. It was, after all, one of the few I never managed to document despite badgering him to no end over the course of putting both Disposable books together. He has a reason—a very good one at that—for not letting me have a photographic crack at his archives, and even though I have no plans for any future books I’m still curious as to what he may have squirreled away during his time at the epicenter of Orange County skateboard production in the ’80s. God help me but shit like this keeps me up late at night.

Poweredge: We are Skateboarders

The crew at Poweredge Magazine is wrapping up a film called “We are Skateboarders” that looks like it has a lot of potential. Vintage footage mixed with modern footage, and a healthy dosage of professional skateboarders on camera. Check out the trailer after the jump. Should be good, after all, one of Poweredge’s publishers Larry Stevenson is the actual inventor of the kicktail.

eBay Watch: December 2009

I’m sorry that this is a couple of weeks late everybody. I could make excuses about how busy the Christmas season is and other shit that’s going on in my life, but truth be told there wasn’t much that went off in December on eBay that got me fired up. When I have lots of exciting stuff to cover I get fired up and this shit types itself. But when it’s an average month with tons of the same old same old to sort through, it gets difficult to get motivated to look for the unusual and type for hours on end. So it was in December. There was some interesting stuff, but very little that got me really excited. Now, looking forward to January I already have some good stuff stored, so that is looking a lot more promising! Anyway, that being said I hope you enjoy this months edition because I worked really hard on it, and tried not to give you the same old Hawks and Gators etc.

1978 Pepsi Commercial with skateboarding

Saturday Starrs #11: 1978 Pepsi Commercial

This 1978 Pepsi commercial has everything; street skating (well, sidewalks), a dog on a longboard, hockey helmets, gorilla gips, flyouts, freestyle, soft volleyball kneepads, skateparks and more. Watch the video, courtesy of skate and surf film historian Scott Starr, after the jump.

Friday T&A on S&A: Naked Brad Bowman

Yes, the bottom of this Brad Bowman deck is naked, but I wouldn’t go for such a cheap shot. Instead, click here for cheap shot that is so fuzzy it might be SFW. The seller of this lovely item (listed at $475) also has things like petrified buffalo skulls and 300,000 a year old turtle fossilized turtle shell. Times are tough when you have to sell your nudie board and your Museum of Natural History pieces. – Thanks to Chip Jones for the tip.

SOTW 1-18-10: Skateboarding Stepe Brothers

So this isn’t the first time the Stepe brothers have appeared in a Shot of the Week. This shot was circa 1985 at the Stepe brothers ramp in East Peoria, Il. It was used in an article titled “The Skateboarding Stepe Brothers.” That’s Chopper holding the skateboard as extension and Barry on the backside. Who are the Stepe Brothers? Founding members of the hardcore scene in Illinois. Said Barry: The ramp was the old Stepe Brother Ramp in East Peoria, actually. Brad (AKA Dr Brad here on S&A) used to rip it up all the time. We even had a punk concert on the flatbed once with the Not (From Boston) and the cops showed up about three times. We were slam dancing around the ramp. Then the PA started smoking and caught fire – that was it for punk rock on our Ramp. Our dog, Spanky, used to Fakie along with us on the ramp all the time. He had no problem making it up to the platform either. Check out the Shot of The Week and a cool bonus shot from the cover of the Illinois State University newspaper, circa 86.

Hey Lester, Let’s go Sadlands!

Check out this awesome Sadlands video courtesy of reader Keith Cote. Almost 10 minutes of skating with Lester Kasai, Rich Salazar, Dave Church, JonJon Bryan, Albert Sarabia, Lenny Moss and Dave Ullery, as filmed by Terence Yoshizowa. I know that top frame is out of frame, but some of those airs were too bio to be contained by the fish eye. Make sure you watch all the way through or you’ll miss a very nice move at the very end. These guys make this spot look so fun, almost like a… what’s the word I’m looking for? Oh yeah, playground.
