Not an Upgrade
Like scooters, Donald Trump, and anything else that has outlived it’s usefulness, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles just won’t go away. TMNT has been enjoying a resurgence for a while now. While the animated series definitely surpasses the TMNT’s original incarnation, this incarnation of Mondo Gecko action figure is about as uninspired as it gets, especially when compared to the original toy.
These nice photos are from Mike’s Vintage. I had planned on taking my own but I failed to read the auction description completely on the Mondo Gecko I bought of eBay and was surprised when his skateboard showed up missing a set of wheels. This figure, though hideous, reeks of life.
Check it out, he’s even got a little miniature skateboard tied to his tail.
That’s definitely an aftermarket sticker on the top of that deck. I’m almost positive it came from Topps Stylin’ Skateboards candy.
I hold zero emotional attachment to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but this lackluster toy pisses me off. It’s totally devoid of inspiration, and at $10 there’s no way I’m going to buy it. That’s probable not true, but I’ll be making a frown face as I slide my card into those annoying chip reading slots, that’s for sure.
Poor skateboarding lizard… Oh wait, that’s PRO skateboarding lizard.
Actually, he looks pretty cool out of the box. His Vans Sk8 Hi-top knockoffs and Hosoi bootleg t-shirt are a nice touch. He looks, dare I say it… radical.
