Surf MC's - Surf or Die

Surf or Die

This is the Surf MC’s album Surf or Die that came out on Profile records in 1987. It’s pretty awful stuff, but the video has decent art direction with a little bit of Pee Wee’s Playhouse and a lot of Stacy Peralta and Craig Steyck. At first I thought it was a music video that Peralta would rather forget, but they used Skull Skates boards instead of Powell Peralta.

– Thanks to Heath for the record and Johnny Sampson for the tip.

Here’s the album cover. Very neon, very 80’s. Very much a bail in panel three.

The back cover features an unfortunate photograph of the guy with the skateboard who happens to look like someone’s aunt and/or a WNBA player in this picture. It’s funny because he looks like Jason Lee in a wig on the cover.

Stickers that came with the album.

surfmcs-stickers

The TV screen that very shortly gets beat in with skateboards. I think I’ve seen that before.

surfmcs15

Cheap Steyck imitation, but still effective.

A couple of these guys know how to skate, but I’m not to sure about the guy in the blue sea foam colored shorts, he seems to spend most of his time wiping out.

The lyrics for this sequence are awesomely bad.

We surfed past Magellan. We surfed past Columbus. We surfed the whole world and we don’t need a compass!

surfmcs05

Skateboarding in the mouth of a shark. Radical!

Stop action animation with skateboard trucks.

Skull Skates in a RHCP “Higher Ground” inspired sequence.

surfmcs13

Flaming toy store skateboard.

surfmcs14

Destroying another one. Oh the humanity.

Some freestyle footage drawn over like a budget A Ha video.

  • This is a great write up about Surf MC’s. Totally terrible. Wow. I don’t remember them in the 80s, but I grabbed the Surf or Die 12” single from Goodwill the other day. I may file a law suit against Goodwill and get my $1 back. LOL. Sooooooo bad!

I still have this on an old VHS tape somewhere. Probably wedged between local news covering skateboarding in CU and some WWF saturday night’s main event!
