    So whats the verdict?

    • A

Well it’s pretty clear that most people have responded favorably. I spent some time trying to change the icons to “Skate” and “Annoy” which I agree make more sense for this site, but the problem is the plugin I’m using has all that hosted remotely, and the logic that serves up those images is hosted remotely in an IFRAME served up by Likebot…. There’s no way to change it, barring some sneaky jquery for changing the images after the page has been loaded. I’m hesitant to do that for performance reasons. Unfortunately there are no other like/dislik plugins for wordpress except for one that had a hidden link to a poker site at one time, so I don’t trust it.

Eventually I will figure out a way to use my own images, I may have to write the plugin myself.

  • I love that skate and annoy button idea the best !

  • NO !
I keep complaining about the lack of comments on my blog, a thumb (up or down) means …nothing.
If you want gimmicks, why not a “LOL” or a “haha”, even a “so, so” or “cheers” or “fuckin’bloody mess” button ?
Absolutely no interest, I guess it might even prevent a few readers from actually sharing a comment !

  • Thumbs up always

  • If there was a word or image for tapping out your applause…

    • I want to be able to say “I give this post three solemn taps of my tail on the coping without making eye contact”

  • A

I thought it would be an easy way to say this is cool/uncool without having to leave a comment that says “This is good”, because how interesting is that? I figure it’s small enough to be benign. If you don’t care, you don’t have to click either one.

You’re not necessarily voting on the quality of the post, but more of the idea or facts it presents.

  • I’d always give it a thumbs up on the quality of the post (wiping off nose now) but the for the quality of the actual content it could give us all an idea of how your community feels. Making more relevant to your site with Rich’s idea would be cool.

  • Eric from Rockford

If we are using it as a tool to shape content then I am okay with the thumbs. But if it’s a popularity contest, I don’t need it.

    • Atticus from the Rutherford Estate

I do agree with the latter half of your statement, my good man! What an exciting debate this is turning out be!

  • Instead of thumbs up/down icons, how about skate/annoy icons? Skate being the affirmative and annoy being the negative. My two cents.

    • The Shralper

the skate/annoy thing would be genius, not because it should be compared to an Affirmative/Negative or would provide us with any useful information, but because it would just be clever and funny

    • A

I thought about that actually, I could make it mongo and regular, but that would confuse for sure…

  • talentlessquitter

    The numbers on 11-29-10;

    Indy grab: 25
    Mute grab: 3 (regular footed)

  • Are we giving a certain topic a thumbs up because we agree with the content in a post, or do we do it because we think it is LAME or funny. It’s confusing.
Don’t even get me started about that stupid poke icon on facebook.

  • A great way for people who are banned to provide feedback in a socially acceptable form!

  • it gives you too much info before you even know what the topic is about. rather go in blind

  • Comments suffice…

    • talentlessquitter

Remember the time we couldn’t comment at all?
      Man,was I down!

      But the thumbs are lame,sorry.

I want to read peoples opinions, not their approval.

    • Amen.

  • Wash your hands!

  • Seems about as useful as a facebook like button.

    • masterochicken

Except it’s about things we actually care about.

      • The Shralper

if it is indeed stuff we care about, why does need to be said that we “care” about it(through use of thumbs).
I think comments are more fun to read(‘cept on youtube), and more interactive as well – Ex. this comment
