Skateboard, Uh ah ah.

Die Skateboard-Welle war schon eine Weile in Deutschland angekommen, als man dem Thema einen deutschen Song gab.

In the 70’s there was a German teeny bopper who had some sort of hit song called Skateboard, Uh ah ah. At some point recently he tried to mount a comeback which involved rereleasing the song with new, updated mixes. There’s not much info out there that’s easy to find on this Benny character. For example, iTunes seems to have him confused with a Mexican perfomer of the same name.

Here’s the 1977 single cover.

Here’s the audio track.

Here’s the comeback re-released and remixed single from 1999. So hip it hurts (your ears). To listen to it you need go check out Amazon’s mp3 samples. There’s two mixes with English and German versions of both. The Rudeboard mixes must be some sort of a (crappy) tribute to Trio.

In English, the lyrics are spectacular. “Get out of school, come on and put on your jeans. Leave you homework at home, go where the action begins.” and so on. Aw heck. “Skateboard, oh ah ah. City Surfin, ah ah. Skateboard, oh ah ah. It’s a crazy race. Skateboard, oh ah ah. Sidewalk riding, ah ha. Skateboard, oh ah ah. On the concrete race.”

There’s another German release on the same record label for the same song, but sung by a band called Copains.

Here’s another version of the single, with out the “uh ah ah.”

Plus he bears a suspicious resemblance to Benny Lava, a semi-imaginary Tamil singer.

  4. Can’t believe I found this! My youngest son is a musician and we were talking about weird songs and I told him about one of my buddies from childhood in the 70’s whose parents were very German (the mom was named Hedwig). They listened to lots of German music. One day my buddy played this song for all the guys that hung out and we all cracked up. We would sing it all the time. Glad I could find it and share it with my son.
