Nowadays is different. Mexican Skate Pioneers

Check out this video sponsored by Converse Skateboarding Mexico (Owned By Nike USA… Get over it!) It’s about skateboarding in Mexico, but it’s not a straight up documentary, more of a loose collection of on camera interviews and archival footage, mixed with modern footage. It’s not jut a trip down memory lane, however. There is a lot footage of those old guys (still) skating today. There’s a nice segue from that segment that ends with a 40 year old rail slider revealing a 22 year old kicking off a street segment. On top of that, friends of the site Art and Steve Godoy and John Aguilar are featured in this video which is titled simply Skater. Nice shirt John! Hate that metal sheet. (Re:ramp). Love the name of the skate mag, though. And docs like this and Susan Tabata’s Skategirl sheet all over contrived-in-the-first-place stuff like Dogtown. (Which was unabashedly pimped in a surf magazine by Craig whatsisname, like a damn cowbird or something… then offered up as a time of innocence, instead of unabashed pimpery, thirty years later, for those who don’t remember how embarrassingly dorky and commercial it was.) Also, love the fact that the Mex City gumment just sprang a guerrilla park on them, and they can’t even remember when it appeared. Mexican magic realism. And their subtitled claim about Peru’s Los Saicos even stands up. Instrumentally it’s just garage, but vocally it IS kinda punk. (Those guys sound like they were to ’64 as Wanda Jackson was to ’58… Fujiyama-ish.)

Oh, and I saw a neat trick at my local park last week that starred Mexicans, even though they were not there to use the skatepark part. This family pulls up in a big pickup, the dad opened the door and stands about two feet outside the truck, and suddenly this girl who looked to be about three years old comes shooting out off of the seat like superman, right into his chest.

They dispute the very first punk rock band with The Thrashmen’s Surfin’ Bird (1963)

But hey, that wong is mashed up from two songs of a Rythm’n Blues band.

Punk rock means DIY, creative, attitude, and that excludes the Thrashmen by using other band’s work, ain’t it?

Nowadays is different… mashups are accepted as a creative means of being creative.
