Die Antwoord: Evil Boy

Die Antwoord is not a German hip hop tribute to Adam Ant, rather a freaky hip hop crew from Cape Town, South Africa. A liitle bit Flava Flav and a lot of Gummo. These guys make some crazy videos. Sure they try too hard, but it’s still riveting. The video for Evil Boy features a sculptural figure on a skateboard and a lot of phalluses. Guest African rapper tackles the ritual of forced circumcision that many tribal adolescents have to go through to become “men” in the eyes of their tribe. [See discussion here] These guys are kind of a train wreck, but it’s fascinating. Lead male vocalist Ninja sometimes looks like Joe Strummers’ long lost hillbilly brother. Still, I prefer the Stiv Bators song Evil Boy.

– Thanks to MC for the tip. Yeah, he’s that hip.

I’ve watched the Die Antwoord vid about 20 times. I watched that Bators vid once. It made me feel like joining a cult.

    Scenario:
You come home and your girlfriend is waiting for you in a sexy nurses outfit.

Note: She is not a real nurse.

    Do you:
    a) Explain to her that her pathetic attempt at seducing you is too “fabricated” since she had dressed up like catwoman only one week before.

    b) Use your imagination and pretend to be a doctor.

See Reverend Horton Heat: That’s Showbiz!

      • talentlessquitter

Whohooo! I have had the privilege of seeing them, twice,a long time ago.
        Considering Rev.’s fear of flying.
        Talk about a power drummer!

Pretty crazy shit. Kinda reminds me of old 3-6 mafia. Kinda. Anyways, they’re coming to the Crystal Ballroom on the 14th of this month. Fyi.

  • shes still hot.

  • Cave Man

See, that’s what I like about S&A; it’s possible to have intelligent discourse about stupid shit. But hey, though the Beastie Boys were a real “band” either way, the last time I saw them they were around eighteen and playing punk, and though I like some of their subsequent rap records, even they never struck me as enough of a “real” act to be tempted to go SEE ’em rap. Regarding Capetown, though, it’s only a backwater culturally (and hyperbally), and a snow farmer way of thinking transcends class… but, can be transcended. (Whoops, now that shit’s transcendant?)

  • ok, buy into it if you want. you like em thats great. i dont and explained why i dont.

i am a fan of diplo (who did a lot of this last song/video), because he changes the act up regularly, and he doesnt claim in real life to be any of his acts/projects. i do feel bad for the kids who think bands like die antwoord and major laser are real though.

  • wait… are you saying that jack sparrow might not be real pirate? and that nobody made dirty harrys day? or that keebler elfs didnt bake a shit??? and how about those cookie crumbs i found last year next to the tree…

    whats happening to me?

  • for the record i was born and ive been called/known as mikeD longer than the beastie boy and weve met and known of each other for a long time. ninja however is a completely fabricated character whose real name is waddi jones. he and yolandi grew up quite middle class (actually yolani’s family is wealthy) yet now they pretend and claim to be from the slums of capetown. die antwood is a very calculated performance act, the latest of many personas and groups they have tried. imo its the SA equivalent of gangsta rap made by white rich suburbanites. now i did think it was funny the first time/video, but im over it. like an snl sketch thats funny the first time but then gets turned into a snorefest of a movie.
thats just my opinion though, feel free to have your own, or failing that to attack others’ opinions.

Fake. Not fake. What the hells the difference? This is their old band (or whatever). Been watching these guys for a while and they’ve been entertaining in whichever creepy incarnate they present themselves.

  • Cape town backwaters? are you kidding me?

  • just to make sure. the authenticity of this group is not in the fake background story but the mastership of running with it and going to the lengths of proving who they”are”. that and simple entertainment and enjoyment of beats and lyrics that are simply catchy and fun.

is providing fun and feeling of belonging to group of fans fake? if it is then ninja gonna eat your fucking high horse up stoopid fuckface. think about it…

  • its a totally fake band and yes, they are trying WAY too hard to get attention. the original zeff side video was funny in an SNL/mad tv kind of way, but ive been over and bored by their act for a while now.

    • Cave Man

What rap group hasn’t been fake as a band besides the Beastie Boys and Trick Daddy? I’m more bored by yer act than theirs. C’mon, it’s like a delayed reaction African male companion piece to “Hobo Humpin’ Slobo Babe”; what’s not to like? (Okay, it’d be nothing without Baltimore dj Diplo and Yolandi, and she DOES degenerate into nursery rhyme eventually [which I guess is keepin it real in rap], but still….) Plus, ya gotta hand it to ’em for the fact that Capetown is like Oregon or something… mostly the intellectual equivalent of “backwoods fuckin snow farmers”, as Kil Slug once said of the Soviets (the threat not the band); Durban it ain’t.

Yeah…,like, yeah! You’re not even the real Mike D,buddy!

        Funny you (and hurton) ay that;
One of the things that have always stuck in my mind is Butthead yelling
“That’s that chick from Whale!” when they watched ‘Black hole sun’ by Soundgarden.

    • how did you figure it is fake? i actually find them original and authentic. whats fake about it?

  • Boing Boing, and Dangerous Minds have been instrumental in helping me appear to be keeping up on things.

  • pier park locals….

  • Beavis and butthead would have loved this one…she’s hot

  • that was a good one old man. seriously

  • Im confused.

Was that what you kids call, “trash talking”?

I would go get your facepaint before your late for the next juggalo convention

  • your mama sucked last night and boy was it good. cant fuck with die antwoord…. dont take it so seriously

  • Holy hell that sucked

  • District 9!

  • Totally next level shit.

  • idahosk8gringo

This is one of the scariest things I have ever beheld.

    • talentlessquitter

      I know,it’s the headphones.
      Nice Vox guitar though…

  • that Stiv Bators record on Bomp, Disconnected I think it was called, was pretty good. Not the Dead Boys or the Lords of the New Church, but…

  • talentlessquitter

    Yo,Die Antwoord=the answer!
