Who needs Ed Benedict?

The day after Thanksgiving is supposedly the biggest shopping day of the year. The day we all pull together to support the American retail industry. Naturally, it has become a rallying point for cranky anti-consumerists who set up Buy Nothing Day bent on spoiling everyone else’s fun – unless of course, you enjoy being anti.

Last year we did a Cannonball Run and called it Buy Nothing Skate Everything Day. We have no formal plans to follow it up but you never know. This year we have a couple of new local spots. That could jack up our numbers in less time.

  1. Cool and very ambitious. How can your knees take that many parks in one day?! Hope to see you out there

  2. Great graphic MC.

    Where are we meeting?

is Hood River on that tour?

  4. Still thinking about it. This looks pretty good for no backtracking and ends at a park with lights.

That’s very well planned. Have fun!

  6. Hey, shouldn’t this be on Friday instead?

    I noticed you bypassed Tualatin…

  7. What time at Pier? Anybody else in Hillsboro/Beaverton area want to ride over there with me?

  8. Yes Friday, November 28, 2008 is what I said. I would start at Pier Park at 7:00 am but we may have to rethink this. It’s still raining.

  9. DoS at 1pm! Kidding (sort of). How about a start-at-noon plan, or switch to Saturday, as forecast is looking better. Tomorrow morning is not looking promising, except maybe for Burnside.

  10. Another possibility is to drive down to Eugene and start at Bethel and work our way up as things dry up. According to intellicast it hasn’t rained down there today and won’t tomorrow. Just an idea. Bethel’s a fun park and there’s a few stops on the way back that might be new for people.

  11. Crud. I’m in Seattle. I thought the 28th was Saturday.

  12. As of 9:29 pm it’s still raining. Saturday is looking better. Maybe we should get up early and hit up some of the sales instead.

  13. i think Kohls opens up at 4am. Meet there first?

  15. You guys been shopping yet?

If anyone actually ends up not shopping and skating everything today, do it in honor of this poor dude:

  16. Shut down by moisture. I did get out to Glenhaven for a bit. The shallow end of the Peanut was dry on one side and I dried the other side and skated it. I’m going to try for tomorrow. Today would have been Towel everything day.

  17. even my covered concrete pond was sweating enough to be unskatable.

  18. Kilwag thanks for comin up to seattle and letting us know!

  19. I’ll bring a broom and towels to pier in the morning.

  20. I’m incognito… truth be told, it’s Sammamish, so it’s not even Seattle proper. Didn’t even make it into the city. Had vague plans to check out the Skate Barn but didn’t make that either. Played Rock Band with the in-laws instead. Plus, I’m not so fun to hang out with anyway.

  21. I failed…I bought food, beer, and a kit to make my own beer.
I went to the skatepark at Pacific Park(I think that’s the name), but there were a bunch of BMXers there…
I also skipped skating at Battle Ground, partially because the previous night I started skating there, and BMX kids showed up before I even remotely got a feel for the slippery wetness, and partially because I got there about 15 minutes before the lights would have been shut off.
It’s hard enough to skate at BG in the rain, but worrying about colliding with bikes sent me to other spots that are not so worrisome in the rain, like the wimpy hill just north of town, and a certain area with wet spots to slide through, and dry spots to regain traction..
Tonight, the banks at the park were so wet I didn’t even get out of the car, and headed for the hill instead.
20 years later though, rainskating is just not the same when you’re wearing glasses…lenses covered with rain aren’t the safest thing going down hills…even small wimpy ones.

I bought a new pendleton shirt on sale and skated the newly opened myrtle creek skatepark. watch out for bikers and collisions.

  23. THPRD very wet. Stopped at Home Depot and bought some stuff to do my bit for the economy. Went to Gabriel. Hit my already bad knee sliding out in the wet upper part on first run. Now limping and feeling like an idiot, went to Tigard. Started raining as I turned off 99. Everyone (5 bikers) leaving. Not to be totally defeated, went to DoS, paid (I guess that kind of defeats the purpose of “buy nothing”, but then, I’d already bought a wicked cool drill-bit set for $9.99!, so…) and proceeded to skate like shit. Oddly enough, seemed like almost everyone up in the bowl also having a bad day. Weird vibe, awkward falls… Went home and changed furnace air filters. Thought you’d all want to know.

  24. just swept out the Tigard bowl… it’s skate-ready.

  25. Burnside and Hood River were where it’s at today!
