Alvie might be the original skateboarding dog. It predates Lance’s nemesis in the Powell vid and Tyson by a long shot. This photo of Alvie is from 1980, and I found it on the photo page of the 30 year reunion of Olympic Skatepark in Olympia, Washington, over at Northwest Skater. Olympic is long gone, so the reunion was held at Lower Woodland in Seattle.

Uh...
His shoulders say he’s embarrassed… probably either cuz he DOESN’T think helmets are cool, at least on dogs, or cuz he knows he’s being photographed trying to pound sand(paper/griptape). (I never knew the true origin of that phrase ’til I saw an Irish Setter – which, granted, are dumb as dirt, which this dog reputedly isn’t – busily trying to hump a beach.)

Alvie was my childhood dog. That’s my brother behind Alvie in the photo. For some reason I decided to do a search of the net for anything on Alvie and am happy to see the only famous member of the family has not been forgotten. Great work finding the article. FYI – Alvie was also featured on the programs Kids World and How Come. He also was part of a Sonics half-time show and was a sideline show at the Bacon Bowl. The dog was insanely smart. He really didn’t like skateboarding that much though. He just did it for doggie treats.

My dog Ollie sometimes skates. He gets two feet up and runs until he hits something. Then, he crashes and bites the wheels. Nothing as impressive as these two dogs, but he is a cool dog.
