80’s Zine Archive: Rage’N Nor Cal Local #1

Unbelievably, someone sent me a small box of zines from the 80’s to scan (and return) for the 80’s Skate Zine Archives. I’d just like to say… SUCKER!!!!! Ha ha. That someone is John Drummond, and in order to convince him that they aren’t just collecting mold in my basement, I’ve gone ahead and posted the shortest one he sent, which is Rage’N Nor Cal Local #1. There are a couple of gems that he sent, including a couple issues of Steve Cabalero’s Skate Punk and Steve Douglas’ Go For It! I’ve been playing with the document feeder on the scanner at work with mixed results, so it may go faster. (Mac – Yes, I still have your negatives. Please pretend not to notice that.)

So what’s up with Rage’N Nor Cal Local #1? It says “Only 43 calories” on the cover, and to be sure, it’s a light one at eight pages, only a few small photos and the rest made up of collages of comic strips and logos and advert repros that have been thoughtfully graffitied on. The editor, location and date of the zine are unnamed, but it appears to be from Northern California (duh) Circa 1988 or 1989. Whoever it was seems to have had a Tourette’s Syndrome tic that caused him to mention satanic skateboard graphics. I can’t tell if it’s in jest or not. Nor can I tell if he was really ripping on Powell Peralta and Tommy Guerrero or not. There’s a sense of humor for sure, (see the Secret Spots Revealed, Indy Air and Trick Tip for the Nollie Body Rap.) Most surprising thing: Printed record of someone who is pro (meaning for) Rannalli Trucks. I don’t think I ever saw a set of those in real life. Motobilts and Z Rollers sure, but no Rannallis.

Does anybody remember or have their hands on Steve Cabaleros’ old band,”Odd Man Out” albums. I’d pay for a copy of them.

  2. stan, i have steve caballero’s “bandology” which i think has 4 of OMOs songs, all of them very good, one of them from the Public Domain and Savannah Slamma vids. it also has 4 faction songs (1 new) and then some crap from like his other shit bands…

  3. stan, you can email me at lpescatore@sbcglobal.net.

I think the cover was a oriental emblem, marbleized background with the title “odd man out”? Or something to that effect. Shit, its been 17 years or more since I had the album.

  8. stan, i can save you the trouble of having me dupe it, you can get it here:

Randy, that was Shrewgy’s little skate/humor zine. Walnut Creek, CA, about ’88 or so. I think it’s the only one he did.

Back on topic; Speaking of Cab’s Bandology, I have a demo tape somewhere with the instrumental Hidden Lies (Super Cool Tough Guys) on it. Super Cool Tough Guys were Steve Caballero (S.uper C.ool) and Tommy Guerrero (T.ough G.uys).

“Go For It”, was the first extreme sports movie that I had ever seen. It had skateboarding, skiing and surfing in it. I believe it was made in the late 70’s. Does anyone else that is old remember this movie? I remember seeing it up in Seattle while I was visiting from San Jose. I wonder if it’s still available to see.

Go For it, 1976 movie short

  16. Mark W, thanks for posting Go For It. Great stuff. Pretty much covers it all. The very last pool bit is interesting. You can tell that guy is thinking aerial, but it took a couple more years for gear and experience to help make it happen. I was just seeing that stuff in magazines at the time, but it’s very cool to see everyone moving, and before the park boom. Must have been just before Carlsbad was built, or they would have had it in the footy. Fun.

you can get that movie on DVD at hollywood, i tried to watch it recently. It was pretty bad.

  18. I imagine it wasn’t the best flick compared to stuff done these days but it was early for it’s time. We were pretty limited for skateboard movies back then. We took what we could get and didn’t complain about it…. Classic stuff and really showing the history of what is happening today. I was thinking the same thing watching that footage of the skater trying to fly out. Was that Tony? It kind of looked like him but probably wasn’t.

Hi, this is Shrewgy. I may or may not have made 2 other issues of “Rage-N”. Love your review. The photo credits are Jim Nicholas, Matt Charlot and Luke Ogden. The Rannali connection is an odd one but Fred Rannali the owner was also the inventor of the “Elephant Wrench” skate key and the pistol grip controller for slot cars. I rode for them for a few short years and did their ad lay outs as well as scout some talent for Rannali. Existing team riders before me were Ned “Peanut” Brown of VA Beach and Dan Tag of Team Steam. Pretty respectable guys then and now.
I do have a few ‘zines stashed here in my collection but seems that my pal ol’ Livmo Joe is still a bit more organized and diligent than I. Thanks to him for sending this up to you. Hope you enjoyed it.

Oh about the Guerrero jabs, Tommy has been one of my closest friends since waaaay back like 1979. Rage-N is pretty much all insider humor fueled by way too much weed, lol.
