New! Improved(?) Del Mar
Hello from G.P.K. (Grover’s Photo Korner) I went to so-cal and the skating is lame except for a few parks you know which ones… They are Encinitas, Clairemont, but you can only ride those certain hours and you pay every where except W.S.V.T. Oh yeah they also have a state wide age minimum of 6 years and above, so my son also learned to lie on his trip to California. Yes “to lie” not “to ollie.”
While looking for a place to skate before 3:30 in the afternoon I heard of a new park in Del-Mar. I get there and it’s not done, and not a skater of on the crew of skate park builders. That’s sort of like hiring a crew of stock boys to put a man on the moon. The companies name is 3D, nice guys and I bet they make a mean sidewalk or stamped driveway, but I’m not sure about a skate park. So the bowl was designed by Chris Miller and “Mad Dog Alva”, and some others the guy said I just couldn’t understand him all that well. The real news here is the coping is supposed to be cured under high pressure. This should make it very hard, like marble is what Chris told me. Chris also told me they had to set the coping a couple of times, and they were going to test it the day I left. The pool looked like fun, even before 3:30 in the afternoon..
P.S. It is in the same parking lot as the police station.
way to teach your son a vital life lesson early
If “mad dog” had a hand in this you know its epic.
The stamped brick to rail looks like a bad idea.
just because an old man designed it, doesn’t mean that it was built well….
I think Miller and co just designed the bowl. I could be wrong. I also heard this went to the lowest bidder, and as such, didn’t end up exactly aas designed.
cause we all no the cheapest way is the best way…
It looks well built (The bowl tile job with matching tiled stairs is sick),well designed and probably properly stamped as well. I’ve stamped plenty of concrete and have yet found to find a brick stamp with fine grout lines. The nice street spots of the world built from brick are all tight fitted (brooklyn banks, bubble banks etc.)
The transition from trowled finish to brick stamp would mess with your set up for a rail. On a side note, I skated an exposed aggregate quarter pipe last month in Tel Aviv. There needs to be some of those in parks
I was frustrated last time I went to So Cal as well. You have to pay to skate and nothing is open in the morning (during the week anyway) so you have to skate when it’s f-ing HOT outside. LAME!
Did they make you pray before you skated Encinitas haha!! What do U expect when you go to a park at a YMCA…..? I agree SoCal is lame don’t go there – all the BY pools are square/unskateable and the good parks (NONE in San Diego except WSVT) like Fontana,Santa Monica,Culver City,San Pedro, Upland, Chino, Glendale,Pedlow are WAY too full already and skating at night until 10PM really sucks I hate those nite-lite parks, plus all the parks are overrun by BMX/Bladers/Scooters which you never see in OR….OK OK I’m lying goddamn CA people – oops I just used the Lord’s name in vain just got banned from Encinitas 4ever…..
To all you kids complaining about SoCal….you are all right, it’s lame here. The Parks are lame, the surf is terrible, and the locals are all angry and violent. It’s better you all stay in your own state. Better yet, stop skating and take up extreme knitting or sister-marrying. Stay home kooks!
I’ve seen footy of Miller, Lasek, and Magnusson skating that bowl… I think they’re happy with it. I hope to skate there… someday…
I was shocked to see a kombi bowl at or in the El Camino Real park. The bowl section was an easy 12 plus ft high but the box section was filled with kinks. I give that pool a 7 on the scale from 1-10 but i still think the main pool at Del Mar YMCA is flwaless….. very clean and smooth… but it is open from 2:30 to dark so the sessions are short… all and all skating good or bad pools is still skating…
