Kona Skateboard Magazine Subscription
Technically a magazine, Kona’s Skateboard Magazine might be considered more of a zine put out by a skatepark. I believe it was printed, not photocopied, and was already being published after the downfall of Skateboarder and before the appearance of Thrasher and Transworld. How would our industry be different today if Kona Magazine stepped up their game earlier? Would we have seen an East coast dominated media presence? Would guys in California be trying to overcome the accepted narratives in skateboarding?

Kona Skateboard Magazine was actually printed. Issues in 1981 (when I believe it was first published) are in black and white with some one color pages (usually ones promoting events or specials at Kona). They are printed on uncoated stock. In ’82 they were still mostly black and white but printed on a more glossy stock. Mid ’82 the outside spreads are in 2 or 3 color with some great ads on the back. Later issues continued the 2/3 color outside and some inner spreads with more colors but I’ve never seen any 4/c issues. Amazing photos. I grew up near Jacksonville so this was my mecca. I found a bunch of issues at a thrift store in Jacksonveille in the early 00s. Fun to flip through…lots of stuff with Mike McGill before he went pro, contests with some legends before they were so, Tony Hawk ads that look handmade.
i have an issue dated November 1980. i think that’s the earliest one…
