Skate and Annoy: Features

Skate and Annoy Zombie Cover Shoot
Editor’s Note: More ancient content from the days of static HTML and monitors with lower resolution than your phone., Preserved here for posterity. Enjoy. K.ed – 3/5/14 Skate and Annoy Cover Shoot Causes Mayhem at Local Skate Park! Zombie Cover Shoot: Volume 2 Number 1May 2002, Newberg OregonSkater: Steve Grover Not really… I set out to shoot the cover of the new print issue (Volume 2 Number 1) that is titled “Return of the Annoying Dead.” The title was originally slated for an issue in volume one. Since we never used that concept, I resurrected the idea and conscripted Grover to wear a mummy costume for the cover. Two rolls of crepe paper, one suit of women’s long underwear and a roll of film later we were done shooting. Suprisingly, only one kid asked us what were were doing. There was only a handful of skaters present, and most of them just gave us sideways glances. I suppose we looked like kooks, but where’s your sense of humor? Grover thought that I bought ladies long underwear so just so I could make fun of him. I told him it was cheaper and there was no way anyone would ever know…
SLC Olympic Village skate demo
Editor’s Note: Here’s another one I almost decided not to re-post. The photos are embarrassingly bad. They are in fact scans of 35mm prints from Walgreens. I actually had an early digital camera, but the resolution was low, the optics crappy, and in general, they weren’t good for action shots. Even the still shots had compression artifacts. The whole thing is kind of mediocre, but again, I decided not to shy away from past mistakes, so here it is again for the sake of history and continuity. Originally published in April or so of 2002. This feature goes way back to the days of static HTML. The pictures are tiny because everyone had small screens and modems back in those days. Enjoy. K.ed – 3/8/14 The Setup: Ice Village Demo Did you read the article about building a vert ramp for the SLC Olympics? Come on, did you wade through all 17 pages? Probably not. What is so interesting about building the damn thing if you don’t actually get to skate it? Somebody got to skate it. I went back to SLC to check out the pro demo and take pictures.
Bowling for Skateparks
Editor’s Note: Oh man, this really takes me back to when the web site had a much more limited, regional readership. This feature goes way back to the days of static HTML, but has since been imported the database for the same of posterity. The pictures are tiny because everyone had small screens and modems back in those days. iPads have higher resolution. The original publication date has been preserved in the post date. I almost didn’t port it to the new back end, but hey, it’s history, warts and all. About TOTS – I think that was an acronym for “The Old Timer’s Session” that used to meet at the now defunct Beaverton, Oregon vert ramp. Enjoy. K.ed – 3/5/14 TOTS team raises cash for Portland skate parks. On April 6, 2002 The doors to the bowling alley opened at 9:00 AM (Yes that’s AM). The object was to raise $10,000 to help raise awareness and get an initiative on the ballot to set aside money for the Portland Parks District. If the initiative gets passed, Portland is supposed to get, among other things, two public skateparks. Participants were supposed to raise at least $100 bucks via pledges or…
Skate Valentines Day
Editor’s Note: This is a pretty paltry offering as far as “features” go., and I ‘m not sure why I decided to profess my alleged homosexuality. I must have thought it was funny 12 years ago. This feature goes way back to the days of static HTML, but has since been imported the database for the sake of posterity. The pictures are tiny because everyone had small screens and modems back in those days. Your phone might have higher resolution. The original publication date has been preserved in the post date. I almost didn’t port it all to the new back end, but hey, it’s history, warts and all. Enjoy. K.ed – 3/5/14 Skate Valentines Day I’m Gay: Valentines 2002 Here’s a tip from the heart for all you skateboarding lovers out there. Why choose the traditional route of expensive flowers and lingerie? Your loved ones will no doubt prefer the personal touch associated with a crappy valentine featuring your true love, skateboarding. Take a look at the latest attempt to cash in on skateboarding. Do you have any skate valentines that aren’t here? Send ’em in.
SLC Bunk – Building the Olympic Village Vert Ramp
So I’ve got this friend who called me up a month before Christmas and with a dubious story about building a vert ramp for the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. Let’s call him “Gordo”, because that’s what his name is. I was a bit skeptical to say the least. It seemed a little bit too close to the event to not have important details like this worked out. Things Gordo says he’s knee deep in while maintaining a perfect 4.0 GPA at a college that he has still never told us the name of… (According to Dr. Brad) Designing “medical equipment” Designing mountain bike components for some company that he wouldn’t tell me the name of. Full sponsorship from (who else?) Alva and Vans following his pro division contest runs at this summers Warped Tour (when I asked how the bands sounded he replied “what bands?”) Designing and manufacturing skateboard helmets Note: Brad and I got in a lot of trouble with Gordo for that last part. Gordo, it’s all in good fun! We swear! I’m unemployed. It sucks. I have no money. I’ve been unemployed since shortly before the September 11 attacks. As New Year’s Eve approaches, this…
The Story of Iron Cross: Art and Steve Godoy Interview
Way back 1987 we had the good fortune to interview Art and Steve Godoy for issue number 6 of Skate and Annoy. Somehow they had seen a copy and had given us positive feedback, especially concerning Neil’s infamous “Hate Page.” We did a good interview with some silly questions, and even let them vent on their own “Hate Page.” Cut to 2001. Neil and I were talking about the zine and Neil wondered what the Godoy brothers were up to. Unbeknownst to him, I had already scoured the internet and had come up with two e-mail addresses via their respective tattoo parlors. As a way of jump-starting the new print issue of Skate and Annoy, Neil got in contact with them and with Art and Steve’s help put together the opus before you.
How to get an old school setup
Editor’s Note: This originally appeared in print issue Volume 2, #1 of Skate and Annoy, circa 2001. It was written was written for about a year in advance. Enjoy. K.ed – 3/5/14 So you’ve finally decided to start skating again, or that old Santa Cruz has finally given up the ghost after all this time. You want a new set up, but you don’t want one of the new school skinny Popsicle stick boards. You can’t afford the prices old decks are going for on eBay. What can you do? Stop skating? Never fear, the answer is here. I’ll tell you how to get an old school set up that won’t break the bank. Decks There are a few websites out there that sell decks from the…
