Animated shot of the week with the Greek

Here’s the entire clip that is the source of the frame grab that was used as the Shot of the Week at the beginning of the month. some people grouse about using a video grab, and normally I would agree, but I really liked this shot. Apparently so did Bryce, because it ran simultaneously over at Skate Daily. Thanks again to the Baade.

Action Sports Environmental Coalition

Did you know there was an organization called the Action Sports Environmental Coalition (ASEC)? Me either, until Brian Baade (…that name sounds familiar) told me they were on hand at the X-Games, watching over such green initiatives as fact that all the concession utensils, cups and plates are compostable. What the purpose of ASEC? It’s damn near impossible to find it on their website, since it’s set up more like a social networking site than something informative. OK, I did find it. It’s on the front page past all the videos and user photos: ASEC works to inspire the action sports industry and its participants to value and take action toward social and environmental responsibility. That’s an excellent idea. Their first task ought to be convincing the X-Games (and Maloof brothers) not to build disposable semi-recyclable concrete over wood skateparks. Spend the money and carbon credits on a permanent skate structure that gets donated to the community. I know there will be logistical hurdles in providing the spectacle for spectators, but figure it out instead of just paying lip service towards supporting skateboarding and a green environment. Put that in your Birkenstocks and smoke it. It’s hard to tell what…

Ex X-Games

Brian Baade sent in this shot of the dismantling of the X-Games superpark. They made a big deal about the concrete being recyclable, it would be interesting to see if they actually follow through on that… Unfortunately, we may never know… unless there’s a reader still there on the crew? This shot is from yesterday.

SOTW 8-03-09: The Greek – Truck’s eye view.

This week’s Shot of the Week is from Brian Baade, He mounted a camera the Greek’s board during a practice run for the X-Games skatepark event. If you watched the X-Games yesterday you might have noticed that is is actually a still image from the actual footage they played after coming back from a commercial. Check out the Shot of the Week, Bonus frame after the jump.

Mega Ramp construction

I always wondered how they built the X Games mega ramp, and this is not what I expected. California Skate Parks is the builder, and their PR firm is trying to drum up some press, offering interviews, tours and such. Do any of you guys have any (reasonable) questions? Maybe we could make it a group effort. (FYI I’ve got a killer Brian Brannon interview coming up!)

X Games superpark course, concrete on wood construction

Concrete on wood… finished

Just got this image of the completed X Games superpark course made from concrete poured over a wood frame from an anonymous source. Thanks! Down the road there is another media event called the Converse Costal Carnage. Looks like they’ve got another crazy temporary bowl setup.

xgames concrete skatebaord park course

Concrete covered wood?

I’ve been hearing some rumblings about the new X Games Skateboard Park Course. It supposed to be concrete, and temporary, which are two things that sound like they are at odds. The street course at the Maloof Cup might have been made using prefab elements that can be disassembled and reused elsewhere, but will the same thing work on a bowl complex? The real interesting thing is that I’ve heard rumors that the X Games course will be made from concrete poured over a wood frame and/or styrofoam combo. Styrofoam in a skatepark construction is nothing new – (See here and here) It’s been used in the soon to open (already open?) Seattle SeaSk8 replacement, mainly for it’s lightweight benefits. The new location is on top of some underground elements of Seattle Center. Again, these are rumors, I haven’t been able to corroborate them, but concrete over a wood frame… puzzling. OK readers, who is connected? What’s really going on?
