Halifax Canada weekly The Coast, tackled the mounting malaise caused by the Halifax Police departments increasingly draconian enforcement of helmet laws for skateboarders. Whew! That was a mouthful. Sign me up for journalism school. They’ve gone so far as to use undercover police officers in sting operations. The article is aptly titled Skate Free and/or Die. The cover features a very nice Riley Smith shot of Dale Hussey helmetless, doing a proper straight-armed layback air. Nice cover parody of Thrasher, by the way. I guess they normally don’t do the fake cover gimmick. On the right is the now out of date cover of What’s Up!, a monthly newsprint magazine dedicated to covering the music scene in Bellingham Washington. I had no idea there was that big of a music scene there. The skater illustrated is rumored to be ex Lib Tech rider Ryan Williams. Catch the covers after the jump.

This Titan missile silo complex located one and a half hours west of Spokane Washington is for sale. $1.5 million dollars gets you 57 acres, three missile silos, thirteen other underground buildings and the most expensive street skating spot you can find. At least you won’t go to prison for barging it. Looks like a great spot for a photo shoot.

Hey, it’s the new park in Toledo Oregon. Built by Airspeed, strictly for the locals with beginners in mind. Not a so-called “destination park.” One high wall about 7-8 feet with a slight bend and cement coping. The rest is pretty much averages out to be waist high or less withthe ocaisonal higher spot. Metal coping of varying sizes. Included in the park is a bowled end that is 3 1/2 feet deep with simulated pool tiles and oververt! (?) Smooth concrete to skate on and funky castle looking forming made on the sides. This is not one of your typical wide open Oregon skate parks. It’s got a quirky design, that requires some effort to find the best lines, but can be a lot of fun adapting to. The important part is, all the locals were stoked. Well at least all the kids from nearby Newport were. Almost everyone we talked to was from Newport and said two things: The Newport Park sucks and they love the Toledo park.

I was in Carnation Washington for a couple of hours. I spent most of the time at the park completely by myself. As I was getting ready to leave some people showwed up, including some Sleestakers. This is a small park. The shallow end is a little steep, the coping is not set consistently, and it’s a little to spread out in places, but it’s still fun.

We took a chance on a dicey weather forcast under the guise of telling our significant others that they could go to IKEA while we skated. From I-5 North: Get off on exit 137 Milton / Fife. Immediately ffter you exit, turn left onto 20th stay on the same road for a mile or two to the 5 way intersection and stop light. Take a soft left (Milton Ave Way) uphill. Keep driving, you’ll see it on the right in a couple of miles. Milton is mere minutes north of Tacoma.

On the way home from a productive road trip to Orcas Island we stopped by the Ballard Bowl thanks to directions we got from Sleestakers like Rev and Tim and a bunch of other’s whose name I can’t remember. Although we were exhausted, we decided to check it out since the Ballard Bowl sits on the endangered species list. The locals were cool, and not all that local. The session was winding down but I still managed to get a few pics. Last I heard, demolition is scheduled for January 2005. What a waste. Go ride it before it’s too late.

Road trip to Orcas Island!

Under the guise of going somewhere beautiful over Labor Day weekend, Shawn and I managed to dupe (I mean, suggest to) our significant others that we should go camping out on Orcas Island. Clothing-optional hippie hot tubs aside, we had a great time. Aside from the little kids almost everyone else at the park was from out of town. Some Seattle Sleestakers were there, as well as the Skatepark Guide crew from Socal, a couple of guys from Chicago, more Portlanders like ourselves and mysterious Corvalis Oregon residents with ties to Brand X skateboards. Joining the Skatepark Guide crew was Scum rider and recent Oregon Trifecta winner Benji Galloway as well as his fellow Scum of the board, Josh “Screech” Sandoval.
