Invert double decker
It’s always amazing to see what the vert pros can do. Have you ever seen that triple stack they do with two skaters and a bicyclist in the Boom Boom Huck Jam? Still, the Invert on Andrecht about 45 seconds into this video over at Shred or Die is jaw-dropping. Check it out after the jump.
Flatland wizardry out of nowhere
There is some insane footwork in this video. Street skating, straight up freestyle, and several points in between. For instance, the guy doing the handstand fingerflip in the shot above actually ollied on to the top of that pole to get there. Think Natas spin without the spin, and then a departure. I guess kids are out ther getting stoked on old Rodney Mullen videos, and then taking it from there. These guys have got technical skills out the wazoo, but my desire to worship at the altar of their talent is severely tempered by the same geek vibe that hampered freestyle in the 80’s. In this case it’s the cheesy sense of vintage freestyle in their choice of soundtracks. Sick skating though. Check it out after the jump. – Thanks to Eric Cherry for the tip.
Concrete information
Boardistan has a video interview with Brian Harper from California Skateparks talking about the cement on wood structure used in the Maloof Money Cup. I sort of assumed they were going with prefab concrete elements, but it looks like they used foam underneath and concrete on top, with no rebar. The concrete can be recycled, and I suppose the foam could be too. I still feel like they should build permanent skateparks and leave them, but that wouldn’t jive with the Maloof Money Cup sponsors and the X-Games need to have large amounts of spectator seating and controlled access by the media. – Thanks to Brian Baade for the tip.
Bryce Kanights on video: Part 3 and 4
Nemo has posted the last installment of “A day in the life of Bryce Kanights.” Bryce who? That’s Bryce Kanights, photographer / lifelong skateboarder… and if you look at the still capture above, possibly a bicycle vendor of small dogs! Part 3 plus bonus footage, check it out after the jump.
Poweredge Magazine: It’s Alive!
Poweredge Magazine is hitting the streets again. The first new issue is scheduled to come out in August. It’s a gutsy move when other mags are getting thinner or moving to online-only presences. Hopefully there is room for another. I was a fan of Poweredge back in the day, even when I considered Thrasher the best, it was nice to have a different voices out there. Check out the covers, the last one from 1991 above left, and the new 2009 one is on the right. It would have been cool if they had Todd Congelliere reprise his cover shot for the new volume. Check out Tod in the Santa Cruz vid Risk it! after the jump. UPDATE: I guess that’s not Todd on the old cover. I assumed it was because his interview has the biggest headline. The guy on the new cover? Dayne Brummet.
Exclusive: Exposé on famous Northwest skatepark builders
The time lapse movie of Conahan’s bowl pour was a big hit, and if you like that, you’ll love this secret, behind the scenes video of one of the world’s most famous skatepark crews in action, obtained by covert actions at Skate and Annoy. Sure, we’re going to really piss some people off, and we may be alienating ourselves from the entire Northwest, if not U.S. D.I.Y. skate community, but we feel it’s worth it to bring the truth to our readers. Explore the myth vs. reality, fact vs. fiction, as we blow the lid off “the great” skatepark builders of the Northwest and this secret project. Sit back and enjoy. – Thanks to Sarib Khalsa for the tip.
Seemingly random pool skating vids
But not really. Here are four pool skating videos, three of which have a connection. If you can guess it you’ll win the coveted No-prize. The last one is vaguely connected with SnA, in that we loaded it up on YouTube. It was supposed to accompany Skreech Week. Check ’em out after the jump.
Portable NCP/Six Stair
Portable FIlm Festival is showcasing some Buddy Nichols & Rick Charnoski shorts. Six Stair is going to be the new name for what used to be known as NCP FIlms, but what the heck is Portable Film Festival? The Portable Film Festival is a daily online film channel. We profile one great new release each day, every day of the year, plus hunt, tag and collect random great web-based films spotted by Portable Film Festival curators. This is the Portable Film Festival’s serious commitment to international screen culture and to broadcasting and distribution models outside of traditional old media channels. Through our site, quality international releases will find audiences online, every day, all year round. So.. It’s a web site with films. Check out the Six Stair showcase from the reigning kings of capturing skateboarding on film, the 18 frame per second kind. If you are in Australia, you can catch the premier of Deathbowl to Downtown at the Melbourne Film Festival in August.
A day in the life of Bryce Kanights by Nemo
Well, the production values aren’t quite up to GVK standards, but it’s pretty good nonetheless. Not so much about Bryce, more like skateboarding with Bryce. This was put together by the folks who hosted the Burnside art benefit. (Way to shut off the beer with no notice for all the people waiting in line…) The show is still hanging at Nemo, 1875 SE Belmont in Portland until July 31. All proceeds benefit Burnside. Getting back to Bryce, Parts one and two. Three is still coming. Good stuff so far. Check it out after the jump.
On a budget
You don’t need a stinking $1200 video camera. GVK, you should be ashamed of yourself. What can you do with a $40 camera from a pawn shop and a $30 fisheye adapter? Tyler Martin will show you, after the jump. The video has street skating, skateparks, private bowls, golfing, the Clash and car tow-ins. What else could you ask for? This isn’t a sponsor me vid, Tyler already has one.
