Levis wants you to skate. FedEx, not so much.
FedEx, Gatorade Propel, and Levis Dockers all have commercials currently airing using skateboards. They range from pretty good to average. Decode my cryptic title with video links and commentary after the jump.
Oregon Skatepark Pioneers on OPB
Oregon Skatepark Pioneers on aired on OPB last week. That’s Oregon Public Broadcasting. Skateboarding on TV is always a crap shoot. Usually the announcers will try and use the lingo, and more often than not, incorrectly. Thankfully Oregon Field Guide didn’t fall victim to that. More commentary and links to the vid after the jump. Check out the top right picture… Almost looks like a video blue screen..
Warren Bolster Interview Video
We’ve edited some footage from an interview we did with Warren a little over a year ago. In the interview he talks about skateboarding and about life and death. We’d like to give back to the skate community like he did for so many years. Here’s a link to a really good video interview of Warren Bolster put together by Pam Rittelmeyer and Mike Papadopoulos. It’s got interesting bits about the industry and a puts a human face on the name behind the classic photographs. He talks a little about his personal difficulties, and you really get a sense of how passionate he was about skateboarding and surfing. It was filmed right before the Concrete Wave collection of his photographs was published. Highly recommended. Thanks to Billy Runaway for the tip.
Pier Park Opening Video
Yes kids, it’s time for another fake installment of Grover’s Video Korner, where we spell quality with a “K” and a smile. This week we’ve got Pier Park opening day video as seen on two TV news channels. Watch Rebel’s Jay Smay completely forget about the existence of Burnside on camera. This link comes to us from Earth Patrol Media’s YouTube Tuesday where we usually poach our videos. Except this time it’s our upload that he poached from us before we linked to it. So we are poaching ourselves recursively, which should allow us to go back in time and purchase a bunch of NOS Natas boards and sell them on eBay for a fortune. Also included is Gar’s video from opening day with decidedly less awkward slang from news anchors. At the end you can see me taking this shot. Too bad I couldn’t focus. Last but not least, there’s a clip on the Antigravity Press site.
Grover’s Video Korner.
Where Kwality is Spelled with a “U” as on YouTube. I’ve been meaning to get Grover to contribute a few key video finds a week or so, since he seams to spend a lot of time surfing YouTube. His other passion for the personals on Craig’s List has no place here. Kicking off the inaugural post is this slam section compilation titled Skateboarding Pain LOL which may or may not have been compiled by Funny-Videos.co.uk, but was definitely poached from EPM. Now to talk to Steve…
Six Degrees of Suicidal Tendencies
Updated: Instead of just tipping my hat to EPM’s post on Suicidal Tendencies’ Institutionalized video, I decided to turn it up to 11. The vid caps above are from no less than three four different Institutionalized appearances on video: The straight video, a Beavis and Butthead appearance, a fake live appearance in a club on Miami Vice!, and the video for Institutionalized 93 – the remake. More vid caps and links to the vids after the jump.
Re-Devo
One good Devo post deserves another. The Wipeouters are described as a reformation of a pre-Devo garage band, although you have to take that with a grain of salt because those guys tend to make up a lot of their historical information. Juice Magazine did a piece on them around 2001, which appears to have been when they peaked. Yesterday’s Devo video got me interested, so I dug up this Wipeouters video for Twist-N-Launch on Youtube, complete with a skateboarding little person.
Freedom of Choice
Classic Devo and classic skateboarding, circa 1980. Maybe the first music video to feature skateboarding if you don’t count Skater Dater. The DVD compilation The Complete Truth About De-Evolution has been out since 2003, so it’s not surprising that this clip turned up on You Tube. Peep it via Earth Patrol Media, who had the good sense to spot this. Yes that’s Stacy Peralta up top. Some other pros are in it as well, but I can’t remember who.
Hans Moleman’s “Football To The Groin”
While we’re on the subject of video slams I might as well post this one for you which comes courtesy of Foundation Skateboards newly redesigned web site. Foundation has been at this web thing for 10 years now, and they are proud of it. The vid has a lot of Internet famous footage of wacky extreme sports slams and other people just being idiots. Good for a laugh.
Loop Of Death
Ouch. Last year I covered this event. This year I just kind of forgot about the Billy Runaway of video clip on his blog. The clip is hosted on a site called
