Video Days – Blind – 1991
Video Days from Blind Skateboards, circa 1991. One of my all-time favorite videos. Spike Jonze was the director for this video and he definitely set the bar when it comes to filming/editing. Blind was started by Mark Gonzales in 1991. The company name is an intentional jab at his former team, Vision. This was a time when Street Skating was developing at an insane rate. Although the video is mainly street oriented; there is some vert featuring the Gonz and Jordan Richter. There’s some really good music on here as well, including Black Flag, Husker Du, Dinosaur Jr, and much more. Blind now offers this video on DVD by combining it with What If?. Featured Skaters: Mark Gonzales, Rudy Johnson, Jason Lee, Guy Mariano, and Jordan Richter run time: 24 min 0 sec – Check it Out
Australian man to Tod Swank: F U!
Australian man named Grant Hicks is challenging Tod Swank’s world’s largest skateboard record. Sure, there have been other contenders, and it’s not official yet, but Hick’s board is supposed to be 9 feet longer, and he’s documented the hell out of it with five of his own videos as well as an appearance on an Australian TV news program. If you’re only going to watch one of them, the TV one is your best bet. You’ll do a double-take when you hear how the anchorwoman’s thick Australian accent makes the word “deck” sound like a part of the male anatomy, leading to lots of juvenile fun with sentences like: “The father of three hopes the giant deck will help raise money for his local (unintelligible) saving club.” and “Seven month’s of hard work and Grant’s monster deck is around 9 feet longer than the current world record holders.” Wow! Dirk Diggler is rolling over in his grave. Catch all six videos after the jump.
Best / Worst Dad ever
I have a son who is nearing two years old. I hope that I will be the kind of dad who, like this one, decided that if he was going to go through the trouble of risking a divorce by making a rocket powered skateboard for his son, he would at least pad him up in a crash suit and a full face motorcycle helmet. I also hope my son won’t disappoint me like the kid in this video did. Check it out after the jump. That rocket packs more power than it looks like. Lighting it with a blow torch is a nice effect.
Port-a-potty board
Coming in Spring of 2007 and promising an “instant change in skateboarding” the Port-a-Board skateboard not only breaks the deck down into three pieces, but the trucks are also on some sort of binding system that allows them to pop off for easy storage and transport. With a name like “Port-A-Board” you leave yourself open to the inevitable potty joke. I know I couldn’t resist, or maybe I’m just lazy. Portable skateboards are nothing new, but this one might have more of a chance than the Stowboard. At least the basic mechanics operate like a regular skateboard, rendering null and voiding any arguement against bringing a skateboard to school. Performance-wise, I’ll be a monkey’s uncle if this thing can actually stand up to some serious action, although that shouldn’t be a problem for most kids who usually just stand around at a skate park. Watch the video complete with dramatic soundtrack and more after the jump UPDATE: Fixed the link to the Port-a-board web site. Sorry.
Chaniwa. Japanese for Skate rock?
To the people who love all additionally punk rock, skateboard, and “Bring Out Original Zouls” I found this band from Japan called Chaniwa by accident. The live video sounds like standard punk rock with a little Rancid influence, albeit in Japanese. OK, but the one song working on their Myspace page sounds like a different (and lame) band. They use some skateboard imagery and seem to have appeared on some Japanese skate rock compilations (again, as near as I can tell…) Japanese punk rock? Hell yeah. Let’s hear it from the Blue Hearts fans! Anyone? Come on! Surely you’ve heard of the Japanese Clash? I don’t know what the story is with these Chaniwa guys. Danimal, you are our Japanese proxy corespondent, get your wife on this. Watch the Chaniwa video and see some cool Blue Hearts pics after the jump.
Is What it is – Consolidated – 1999
Is What it is from Consolidated Skateboards, circa 1999. I really enjoy these earlier Consolidated videos. It has a really good mix of Street and Vert throughout each persons part. More about Consolidated Skateboards after the jump!
Grover’s Video Korner # 8 – Birdie
Warning! This has nothing to do with skateboarding, other than the main guy featured in this video is the same guy used in the still at the end of each segment. Don’t worry. It’s the last time, and Grover has been grounded with no TV for a week. – k.ed. So I have a couple of loyal viewers. Here’s something you didn’t know about me. I love R.C. planes so much so I made this video about a friend and his new $1.400 plane. What a ritchie. Watch and destroy. Grover Off.
The ghost of Barry Zaritsky in Skateboard Sense
Hold on to your mustaches, it’s a skateboard safety film from the 70’s. There have been a couple of educational films made over the years that deal with the subject of skateboard safety. I’ve seen bits and pieces of some before, but the full versions have always eluded me. Thanks to the folks at I-Mockery, not only can I watch it, but I don’t even have to go through the trouble of making fun of it. Actually, this kid just appears to have narcolepsy, because that’s the only explanation I can come up with for his randomly falling backwards like that. But who knows… maybe you have narcolepsy too and don’t know it! Are you really willing to take that chance!? The 70’s rule. You can soak up the bad fashions, groovy soundtrack and stylin’ moves after the jump.
Satanic cult worship and vague, general feeling of being “out of touch” concerns local police.
At the urging of Old Man Army, Recent Skate and Annoy conscript Elder Skelter (long first time reader, first time caller) sent us this newspaper article scanned from the November 12, 1987 issue of the Valley Times. Things must have been pretty uptight in Geauga county Ohio for the authorities to get that bent out of shape over some innocuous graffiti. Talk about out of the loop! Reminds me of the scene in Rock ‘n’ Roll High School where Mr McGee asks “Who are these Ram Ones?” You can read the very funny (in a sad way) article and see the half-hearted correction they printed the next issue after the jump.
Way Out East! – Stereo – 2004
Way Out East! from Stereo Sound Agency, circa 2004. This is a three week long tour video of London, New York and Paris with a little west coast action thrown in for good measure. I really like this video for its smooth style, and it always seems like they are having a blast. Isn’t that what skateboarding is all about? To answer my own question… Yes, yes it is. The entire video is shot in either 8mm or 16mm film. I didn’t even know that Stereo was still a company, but I guess Jason Lee seems to have run into some money with his TV shows and Movies. Stereo was originally founded in 1992 by Jason Lee and Chris Pastras. After Jason left the company to pursue his acting career, Chris kept the company running, until 2000 when it closed its doors. In 2003 Chris and Jason relaunched the company under the Giant Distribution company. By 2006 they were able to distribute independently which was probably their main goal in the first place. Featured Skaters: Jason Lee, Chris Pastras, Clint Peterson, Benny Fairfax, Keegan Sauder, Olly Todd, Brian Brown, Rick McCrank, Mike McDermott, Soy Panday, and Snowy run time: 27…
