Grovers Video Korner #11: Little D
Hey loyal viewers here is a video of little D. I came about this footage via Justin when he didn’t have his own shop. Its that old. Derek gave it to me for a sponsor me video. Well, he is older, wiser and better now. So sponsor him. Derek is an all around good guy, if you need any tile work done, I believe he is a professional tile setter, and a hella good skater. So here is your video “d” 3 years later enjoy. Peace
A Commercial a Day – Day 3: It ain’t Coca-Cola, it’s rice.
Coca-Cola Road Trip: I think this aired in the summer of 2006. In the story line, some kids get bored building their miniramp so they go on a road trip to find some full pipes in the desert. They skate for five minutes and get kicked out. Someone did some cultural research, throwing in terms like “desert water project” and having full pipes in the first place, except the pipes are small and metal. The punch line is “At least someone got to skate.” Gee, maybe if you hadn’t brought seven guys to the session in the middle of the day it wouldn’t have been a problem. These kids need to learn about stealth. All in all though, a fairly innocuous effort. Catch the video after the jump.
Speed Freaks – Santa Cruz – 1989
Speed Freaks from Santa Cruz Speed Wheels, circa 1989. This was the first video ever made by a wheel company. It gave Santa Cruz the ability to bring skateboarders from different board companies, and put them on their videos. This makes the video that much better, with a great mix of street and vert skating. Santa Cruz also put out Streets On Fire in 1989, which featured some of the best skating to date, especially Natas Kaupas’ groundbreaking part. More about the 80s and skateboarding after the jump.
Granny Skates for CarMax
I’m not sure if this commercial is even airing or not, but thanks to the Interwebs, here it is. There’s nothing funnier than an age-inappropriate person on a skateboard, with the possible exception of a football to the groin. Catch the video after the jump
Car as Skateboard Part 2: Nissan Qashqai Commercial
Looks like it’s a video post kind of day. This is probably the best car-as-skateboard, ahem, in-car-nation I’ve ever seen. Check out this spot for the Nissan Qashqai. “WTF is a Qashqai?” you ask? Well its a Turkic-speaking tribal confederation of clans in Iran. I guess that explains why they don’t sell it in the United Sates… And here I thought it was Icelandic. This post is labeled “Part 2” but I’ve skipped a car commercial or two. There’s another commercial with some sort of creature using a car as a skateboard but I can’t recall what for. I think I might even have it taped somewhere. The best part of this commercial? The wall ride! Watch it after the jump.
Grover’s Video Korner #10: Session of the Old
Hey fellas here is a video from late last summer. I figured I would put it up so we could have something to look forward to. See you at the park. Peace Off.
Helmetcam!
Extreme sports enthusiasts can’t wait to get their hands on this one – and attach it to their helmet, arm, leg or bike! David Addington brought a Oregon Scientific ATC1000 helmetcam to Pier Park a couple of weeks ago. I put together a few of the clips with some of the photos from that day. Check out the 15 frame per second motion sickness inducing video. What’s it like doing an air across the top of the mousehole? Read on.
Whiny Skateboarder Tasered by Police
Watching the interviews with this kid will make you understand why he got tasered. It doesn’t make it right, but I would have been tempted to taser this annoying whiner myself. Campus authorities say the tasering was not because he was skateboarding, it was because he was not complying with police. A girl caught it on her cell phone and posted it on Youtube. Ironically, the original has disappeared and as of now only exists on Youtube as it has been shown on a couple different TV news shows, by pointing the news camera at a computer monitor. After the jump you can find some links to the story as well as a YouTube videos of the the news showing a YouTube video on TV. Can you deal with that? Am I blowing your tiny minds?
A civilized way to spend an evening
Here’s a link to a short bit on a BBC program titled North West Tonight about older skaters. It’s mainly an interview with the founder of the UK’s Middle Age Shred. The video quality isn’t great, it looks like they forgot to deinterlace it. The skating is mostly blah, and when it isn’t the camera work is bad. It does have an impossibly hip sound track considering the stuffed shirt that hosts the program. There is some cool 70’s era footage with a bitchin’ T Rex lead in. If you look close you can see an Old Man Army Falling Down deck – good graphic… From Arizona to Manchester, old men are on the rise. Catch the video and some more old man news after the jump.
Zero Hero – Zorlac – 1991
Zero Hero from Zorlac Skateboards, circa 1991. I’ve watched this video quite a few times. It has some really good vert skating, and the kind of street skating that still had tons of potential behind it. More about Zorlac Skateboards after the jump!
