Rick’s Texas Cereal Bowl
Check out this video of a half-sphere bowl some guy built. One dude is riding a retro looking board so this looks like it could be old but the outfit looks more recent. Check out the video after the jump. Thanks for the link Dan.
GVK#17: We Barge Because We Care Can?
Here it is everyone, the new park at Vancouver. It is a Grovers Korner Exclusive, first to ride. Enjoy and barge That’s what Ivan, Rich and I did. One of the workers for the city told us the park will not open until the whole complex is done (a year) but we don’t care because we barge. ( I can’t condone that statement. I almost didn’t let this post go live. The whole park complex is scheduled to open in 2008 but the skatepark should open at the end of this month, unless the city is annoyed by bargers! – K.Ed )
What, no Mr. Greenjeans?
Not much to say about this 1981 clip of Tony Hawk on the old children’s show Captain Kangaroo. I didn’t know the Captain was still on the air in 1981. It’s a little disappointing actually, since Tony’s appearance isn’t live on set with the Captain. Instead, it’s just video footage of tony skating Del Mar on a Steve Caballero board no less. The Captain’s crew even managed to record an old sea chanty titled Skateboard Johnny, not to be confused with the song Skateboard Johnny featured in this collection of 70’s skateboard tunes, or this UK child molester named Skateboard Johnny. Watch the video after the jump. [Source: Wall of Gray]
Brett Atchley- Portland’s Shining Star
A star emerges outta Portlands Burnside skatepark, how f-ing cool is that? Element is hosting a huge party in Portland at the Mission Theater this Friday night, hosted by Portlands “Golden Boy” Brett Atchley. Details on flyer- courtesy of Element Skateboards. Its worth it to see MyG and The Muska spin records- if your into that sorta thing. Watch Brett’s part and see the whole flyer after the jump.
Seaside Oregon: Grover’s (Fake?) Video Korner #16
Err… The Doctor is here to investigate Seaside Oregon’s new skatepark, with the studies and the data, the gluteus maximus and minimus, and so on and so forth. Oh oh, I hear someone coming. I have to leave…
Best skate video ever
Follow-up to the skateboarding chimp pictures the other day. MVP2 – Most Vertical Primate is the heartwarming story of a professional hockey player unjustly accused of biting an opposing team member and on the run befriending a homeless skateboarder kid and helping him to find a home, success as a skateboarder and… a sponsor! And the professional hockey player, is a clothes-wearing chimpanzee.
Sneaky Nokia ad features skateboarding.
More viral advertising featuring skateboarding. This one in a commercial from Nokia, masquerading as a company called Great Pockets. The joke being that you could buy custom tailored clothing with huge pockets to carry all your electronic gear, or of course you could just ditch all that gear for the Nokia N95 phone. Watch this kid try to skateboard while leaving a trail of battered consumer electronics after the jump.
What’s the 411 on 118 118?
Old people skateboarding certainly has been done before. (See Granny Skates for CarMax) This is a pretty good commercial from the UK, although I was disappointed that the old guy was a stunt man. For some reason I thought he was actually going to get on a board. Maybe the happy music made think it was going to be one of those touchy-feely “don’t judge a book by it’s cover” public service type of commercials. Instead it’s an ad for something called 118 118 which, near as I can tell has something to do with a phone directory or phone service. The park is Something called BaySixty6, which is apparently sponsored by XBox, whatever that means. I guess Playstation has a park too, why not. What do these sponsorships mean? Are they permanent? We know who sponsors the park, but what about the stunt rider? Whoever he is, he rides for Vans and Quicksilver. Check out the old school varial in the action sequence. Nowadays it seems like all the pros forego the the varial for the shove-it instead.
Allergic to skateboarding in commercials
Your kids can overcome their allergy problems using Children’s Claritin, without making them jittery or drowsy. Must not be any good for making meth either. As always, if you can identify the rider or the skatepark, please leave it in the comments. Watch the commercial after the jump.
John from Cincinnati
Any series that features Joe Strummer (and the Mescaleros) singing over the opening credits has already got a leg up in my book. In this case, HBO’s John from Cincinnati uses Johnny Appleseed from the album Global A Go-go. Why do we care? Because the same credits also feature some skateboard footage and one of the actors is sponsored am Greyson Fletcher, son of famous surfer Christian Fletcher. You can watch the nicely done credits and see a little ancillary skateboarding from the show after the jump. Bonus: Guess which local Portland skate company scored product placement?
