GVK#33: Sleestok 2008
Sleestock 2008. So I got hurt rumor has it Finley knocked himself out and got hauled off in an ambulance, he wins. I would have liked to get more footage but circumstance dictated otherwise. Enjoy this stuff I am going to to visit the vicodin couch. Party off.
Saturday Starrs #3: Hobie Team skateboarding promo from 1965
Another installment of Saturday Starrs brings us a newsreel style skateboarding promotional film from 1965, featuring the the Hobie team. I’d like to know who commissioned this film. Newsreel stye films have certainly gone out of vogue. This has to be at the tail end of the genre. When did they start? Some time in the 20’s? I can’t imagine this kind of film today. In any case, The Hobie team is cruising through the tourist attraction in Florida called Cypress Gardens, which was literally at the time just a big garden. At some point in time they added water skiing shows as an attraction too. The visual quality of this film is beautiful. The colors are vibrant, right down to the goofy floppy. Why is the Hobie team all of 12 years old? They must have been hot off the set of Skater Dater. What a strange time in skateboarding.
Still even more old guys who skateboard.
Even though he’s “all old and rickety,” Fox 12 spotlighted Mark Conahan in the Oregon Sports Final segment. Did you know he invented skateboarding in Portland? And then he went on to fund, design and build all the skateparks in Portland. All this was done in his spare time away from his job drawing skateboard comics. You can watch him being interviewed by a barn owl on the FOX 12 web site. Keep your eyes peeled for other notable figures in the Portland skate scene media. I wonder why he’s not promoting this…
Grover’s Video Korner #32: Cold War Projekt 08
So here’s the why I did it. Not my typical GVK but some of my most difficult work. It took forever to put this thing together. I don’t know if it is even done but I am sick of working on it. Just remember, I did it for you my fan. Let me know what you think. Posse out.
Beans – The Tim Brauch Documentary
He’s got a foundation, a skatepark, and a contest named after him, and he’s been honored by the Smithsonian, but what do you really know about Tim Brauch? Pete Koff is producing a documentary for release in 2009. He’s looking for your stories and photos of Tim to make this community project and help round out the documentary. More information and the trailer after the jump.
Saturday Starrs #2: Skateboarding in the 1979 Rose Parade
For the second installment of Saturday Starrs, I bring you this short clip of the 1979 Rose Parade in Pasadena California. The City of Lakewood had a float with one of the clear plexiglass ramps on it, and of course, someone was skating on it too. From the archives of Scott Starr.
GVK # 31: Arron Lui “Back From Work”
Lets all welcome back Arron Lui. He is back cleaning up Aumsville, he has started a trash patrol. I love sponsoring this kid. No KA Oi. figure it out. Pose Off Grover.
State of Black Skate
I got a publicity email from Current TV about featuring this video called “The State of Black Skate,” but I was going to feature it anyway since I found it when I had the Burnside clip on the same site. It’s a short piece on skaters of color (as long as that color is black) in NYC. It ends just as you’d think they were about to get started. It’s almost like an intro segment for a full length production. So, there’s not much meat to it, but there are some good skating sequences. See that guy in the shot above? He’s barefoot. Current ought to encourage longer, more in depth pieces, otherwise it’s just so much filler.
Saturday Starrs #1: Valley Punks VS the Surfer
Scott Starr has the most amazing collection of skateboarding films, commercials and other media from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. I’ve been watching his stuff online for a few years now. I’ve got a collection of media footage from the late 90’s on, but it’s all crap compared to what he has, the Smithsonian of skateboard history in moving pictures. I’m more like a giant ball of twine at a road side attraction. I grab my material off the TV. He finds or buys old films and has them restored. I’m going to start featuring one of his videos on Saturdays. His library is amazing, although with some of it I can’t believe he hasn’t gotten booted from YouTube yet. He used to have a web site but it doesn’t seem to be up lately. Skateboarding is just a part of it, he collects surf and snow footage as well. It’s got to be harder and harder to find nowadays with all the film stock that is probably deteriorating. So cheers to you Scott, I’m glad someone has preserved this stuff. Your are truly doing (the Concrete) God’s work. This first installment is actually one that is a little atypical…
Downhill in short shorts and flip flops
This was going to be another Friday T&A on S&A, but I didn’t want to risk being labeled a misogynist, so we’ll just call this “You know this is going to end well…” This girl is so hot, you might even say she’s slammin!
